Horizons at Ashley Hall is a public/private partnership providing an engaging summer enrichment program and year-round support for girls from under-resourced communities in Charleston. Focusing on literacy STEAM and confidence-building activities like swimming the program helps close achievement gaps through small classes with professional teachers. Girls join before 1st grade and continue through Middle School developing life skills and lasting relationships. Now in its ninth year the program serves girls in grades 1-9 and is at capacity at 135 students in 2026 with the addition of newly developed High School programming as well. Position Overview

Horizons at Ashley Hall is seeking a Program Director (PD) to help fulfill Horizons mission by managing the summer and school year programs. Reporting to the Executive Director the Program Director will be the lead on logistic planning for activities such as meals field trips swimming lessons addition this position will support the recruitment hiring training and support for teachers and support staff. As part of a small team the PD will also participate in a variety of administrative activities. The PD will be responsible for building strong caring relationships with Horizons students families volunteers and staff and for supporting the ongoing development of programmatic partnerships in the community.

We are looking for a collaborative professional with strong program and project management skills and a passion for closing the opportunity and achievement gaps for young people.

Key Responsibilities

August through June:

  • Manage student recruitment and retention activities related to both summer and academic year programming interacting with school staff and parents as necessary

  • Oversee programming and volunteers for monthly Saturday Academies

  • Oversee programming for monthly volunteer HATs (Horizons Assistant Teachers) Meetings at Ashley Hall

  • Develop and coordinate Family events and outreach

  • Support the Executive Director and Development Director on fundraising initiatives and event

  • Maintain program records in the required database systems

Summer Program Responsibilities:

  • Program Operations & Logistics

  • Support the planning and execution of all logistical components of the 6-week Horizons summer program including staff recruitment & training and ensuring a safe organized and enriching experience for all participants.

  • Manage daily arrival and dismissal procedures including staff assignments transportation coordination and parent communication.

  • Manage daily program logistics such as meal distribution schedule transitions and staff coverage ensuring smooth and efficient operations.

  • Program Support & Instructional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Reading and Math Specialists to support the implementation of a high-quality engaging curriculum.

  • Ensure program activities align with academic goals and support student growth across grade levels.

  • Monitor classroom and enrichment activities to ensure consistency safety and instructional alignment.

  • Student & Family Engagement

  • Monitor and support student behavior and engagement using positive proactive strategies.

  • Communicate regularly with families providing updates addressing concerns and maintaining a welcoming and responsive environment.

  • Respond promptly and appropriately to behavioral incidents or safety concerns in partnership with the leadership team.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university required.

  • Professional experience with prior success in program management roles preferably in an organization focused on education out-of-school time programming or youth development.

  • Teaching experience or familiarity with instructional practices highly desirable

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with proven experience in program planning and the ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines effectively.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with staff families and community partners.

  • Ability to thrive in a small collaborative team environment while also working independently with a high degree of initiative and accountability.

  • Strong written communication skills including experience developing reports presentations and/or proposals.

  • Experience supervising or mentoring staff interns or volunteers with a focus on coaching and professional growth.

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to make data-informed decisions to improve program outcomes.

Hours:

  • Academic Year: 5 hours per week

Summer Program Hours: 7 weeks 40 hours per week
- Dates: June 8 2026 - July 24 2026
