New Zealand Police is the lead agency responsible for preventing crime and enhancing community safety. It works in partnership with individuals communities businesses and other public sector agencies towards the vision of making New Zealand the safest country. Police is the governments largest front-line response agency with around 15000 staff in large and small communities all over New Zealand and in liaison and policing development roles overseas.

The Criminal Justice Support Unit (CJSU) is an integral part of the Police Prosecutions this role you will be dealing with sensitive and confidential information from preparing files for court i.e. Judge Alone Trial (JAT) and/or Jury Trial files. With the level of document preparation involved you will need to have high attention to detail and excellent time management skills to produce these documents in a timely manner.

You will need to be motivated and can manage the risks associated with the tasks you are required to complete. This role is a specialised role focussing on producing high quality court documents and criminal disclosure so an understanding of the Criminal Disclosure Act Evidence Act Criminal Procedures Act and the Solicitor Generals Guidelines will be most beneficial. You will also need to be self-managing and have good interpersonal skills as you will work alongside the Police Prosecution Service Public Defence Service constabulary staff and will need to develop external relationships with Crown and defence lawyers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Prepare a variety of prosecution files i.e. Judge alone trials Jury trials Formal proof and mentally impaired person hearings to a standard that provides a prosecutor with a comprehensive report which sets out the case details available evidence and issues identified based upon an analysis of it.
  • Complete initial additional and final criminal disclosure of disclosable material to Crown and defence lawyers.
  • Understand what criminal liability must be established to gain a successful conviction and able to identify the admissible evidence available to do so.
  • Understand what evidential investigative functions are required to present the best possible evidence available to the courts.
  • Contribute to a high performing team.
  • Review files for evidential sufficiency and provide relevant support and advice to constabulary members.

  • Demonstrate ability and experience in a wide range of operational policing duties with knowledge and ability to investigate engage direct and motivate staff.

Utu ā-tau Salary

This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $87306 and $91353 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
