Position Overview

This position is accountable for ensuring that chemical tests conducted on materials used in highwayconstruction and maintenance are performed in the laboratory safely accurately and efficiently.

Essential Functions

Learns the specifications procedures and techniques used to test materials in the chemistry laboratoryto obtain accurate results.
Ensures proper handling of materials and prevents accidents from occurring and familiarizes themselveswith the chemical and physical characteristics of the material as found on the Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Keeps up to date on technical advances in the industry and in the field of materials testing to broadentheir capabilities.
Keeps the work environment clean to ensure that the laboratory is up to code.
Ensures the proper disposal of waste materials.
Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conduciveto the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a bachelors degree in chemistry or chemical engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in the practice of physical and chemical testing processes of asphaltic materials in achemistry laboratory setting.
Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
Knowledge and experience in the theory and operation of various instruments used for physical andchemical tests of asphaltic materials.
Experience working with spreadsheets and databases and/or laboratory information managementsystems.
Experience in generating and interpreting sound and accurate test data.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work well with co-workers especially when sharing spaces and equipment.

Conditions of Employment

Valid drivers license.
Successful completion of a background screening.
Requires occasional travel in-state and out-of-state with overnight stays.
