Position Overview

This position is accountable for ensuring that chemical tests conducted on materials used in highwayconstruction and maintenance are performed in the laboratory safely accurately and efficiently.

Essential Functions

  • Learns the specifications procedures and techniques used to test materials in the chemistry laboratoryto obtain accurate results.
  • Ensures proper handling of materials and prevents accidents from occurring and familiarizes themselveswith the chemical and physical characteristics of the material as found on the Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Keeps up to date on technical advances in the industry and in the field of materials testing to broadentheir capabilities.
  • Keeps the work environment clean to ensure that the laboratory is up to code.
  • Ensures the proper disposal of waste materials.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conduciveto the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelors degree in chemistry or chemical engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the practice of physical and chemical testing processes of asphaltic materials in achemistry laboratory setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
  • Knowledge and experience in the theory and operation of various instruments used for physical andchemical tests of asphaltic materials.
  • Experience working with spreadsheets and databases and/or laboratory information managementsystems.
  • Experience in generating and interpreting sound and accurate test data.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with co-workers especially when sharing spaces and equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid drivers license.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires occasional travel in-state and out-of-state with overnight stays.
