Our mission is to address hunger today and build self-sufficiency to prevent hunger tomorrow. by accepting donated perishable and overstocked food we prepare nutritious meals for thousands of hungry children and adults every day and distribute them free of charge through social service organizations in Greater Indianapolis.


Founded in 1998 by three chefs Second Helpings remains true to its core mission while the ability to serve our community has continued to grow. To date we have rescued nearly 56 million pounds of food and distributed nearly 22 million meals through our 100 area partners.


The Second Helpings building is a vibrant and active one fostering a collaborative work environment. The organization relies on a steady and dedicated volunteer corps that is in the building during most open hours and it sees present and former culinary job training students coming and going regularly. Food and food culture are ever-present and lunch is available on most days.

JOB SUMMARY

Transfer excess prepared and perishable food from donor food service operators to Second Helpings Inc. and redistribute as directed to nonprofit social service agencies.


WHAT YOULL DO includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Pick up food from donor sites. Unload log and store rescued food immediately upon return to Second Helpings.
  • Perform on-site quality control and inspection of food upon pick-up and delivery.
  • Deliver food to partner agencies.
  • Follow all kitchen and food handling procedures; maintain ServSafe certification.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with food donors partner agencies volunteers and co-workers.
  • Accurately prepare food rescue and delivery records.
  • Assist with routine inspections and maintenance of vehicle transfer equipment docks and recycling receptacles.
  • Train and oversee tasks of volunteer staff.
  • May be required to drive a variety of vehicles including refrigerated box truck and delivery vans.
  • Provide assistance in other areas requested and when time permits (including some kitchen maintenance)
Requirements

WHAT YOULL BRINGto perform the job successfully:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Valid Indiana Operators drivers license plus a safe motor vehicle report and you can meet the commercial insurance age requirements
  • Must have or be able to achieve a ServSafe Food Handler certification
  • Able to use GPS applications plus general knowledge of the Indianapolis area
  • Good verbal communication
  • Able to interact positively with people of all backgrounds cultural groups and economic levels
  • Keep neat accurate written records
  • Demonstrate common sense and good judgement
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds using adaptive equipment or assistance if more than that
  • Be physically able to perform all essential job functions
  • Tolerance of weather conditions (heat cold wet airborne particles) moderate to loud noise or moving mechanical parts.

This is a full time hourly position with a compensation of $20.00/hour. All applicants must possess a valid drivers license and must be able to pass a drug screen.
