Special Information:

This is a recurring seasonal position lasting approximately 7.5 months annually and typically runs from March through mid-October.

Specific Job Information:

The Maintenance Worker 1 position is part of the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division and a member of the regional maintenance team that includes the Regional Maintenance Manager Maintenance Team Supervisor Maintenance Workers 1 & 2 and Groundskeepers. The position reports to the Maintenance Team Supervisor in an assigned geographic area and performs a wide variety of semi-skilled or manual work. This may include repairing maintaining and improving existing habitat areas and vegetation as well as grounds and facilities at state parks fishing access sites wildlife management areas and administrative facilities. This position may be assigned to multiple geographic units or be called upon to assist with collaborate on or share maintenance functions of another geographic unit as circumstances require. Employee may act as Maintenance Worker 2 in that persons absence or serve as lead crew member and regularly demonstrates independent decision-making and problem solving. Regional and site-specific variance may exist and other duties may be assigned.

This position plays a critical role in supporting the maintenance and operation of Fish Wildlife and Parks sites with a primary focus on Region 4 State Parks-such as Giant Springs Smith River and First Peoples Buffalo Jump. The role also includes frequent assignments at Region 4 Fishing Access Sites along the Missouri River corridor and Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) throughout the region.

Primary Responsibilities:

Perform routine and emergency maintenance at FAS State Parks and WMAs Conduct facility upkeep including restroom cleaning garbage removal and minor building repairs Operate and maintain equipment such as commercial mowers chainsaws skid steers UTVs/ATVs and trailers mow grass trim vegetation and implement noxious weed control strategies Maintain and repair fences gates signage and trail system. Perform gravel road grading drainage clearing and trail surface repairs Assist with regional projects such as infrastructure upgrades habitat restoration and emergency response. Complete daily maintenance logs equipment checklists and personnel reports using spreadsheets and digital tools. Interact with the public to provide accurate information about site regulations amenities and recreational opportunities.

Work Schedule & Conditions:

Standard schedule: Monday-Friday 8-hour days

Weekend holiday and on-call shifts may be required periodically including evenings and nights. Work is performed outdoors in all seasons including extreme heat cold wind and precipitation. Must be able to lift and carry 30-50 lbs. regularly and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods. Travel within Region 4 is common with occasional overnight stays for remote projects.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge skills and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalency and 1 year of job-related experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate sound judgment. Strong initiative reliability and commitment to safety and ethical conduct. Effective communication skills and a professional demeanor when interacting with the public. Working knowledge of general maintenance and construction practices including carpentry plumbing basic electrical and small engine repair. Safe use and maintenance of hand tools and power equipment. Proficiency with spreadsheets and basic computer programs for reporting and documentation. Familiarity with invasive species management and land stewardship practices is a plus.
