Job Summary

At General Dynamics Mission SystemsCanada youll work on a variety of opticalsensor and Smart Display Unit (SDU) programs gaining handson experience with day/thermal imaging LCD/backlighting and displaymetrology. This position is ideal for someone who wants to grow their expertise in optical system design simulation and test while contributing to realworld defence solutions.

Typical Duties:

  • Run optical simulations by building and support testing lensdetectordisplay chains with tools like Zemax/OpticStudio or CodeV.
  • Set up and operate an optical bench  Align lenses place sensors capture video streams and record performance data.
  • Perform handson display metrology  Measure sunlight readability colour (chromaticity) uniformity reflectance and viewing angle using handheld photometers and spectroradiometers.
  • Assist in component selection  Research and shortlist imaging sensors lenses LEDs backlight modules and touchscreen parts that meet system specs.
  • Help verify target detectionrecognitionidentification (TDRI) performance  Run basic analysis and document the results.
  • Create and update optical drawings  Produce sourcecontrol CAD files and billofmaterials entries for lenses filters and other components.
  • Gather and analyse test data  Use Excel Minitab or MATLAB to calculate basic SPC metrics (Cp Cpk) and flag trends.
  • Participate in design reviews by present test results answer customer questions and take notes for followup actions.
  • Support supplychain activities by helping the procurement team source specialty optics (custom lenses filters highpower LEDs) and track delivery status.
  • Collaborate in a crossfunctional Integrated Project Team (IPT) by working sidebyside with mechanical electrical software and systems engineers to resolve interdisciplinary issues.
  • Learn and apply defenceindustry standards  Get familiar with MILSTD UK DEFSTAN and video interface specs (HDMI DVI SDI) through onthejob training.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in Physics Electrical Engineering Optics Photonics or a related technical/scientific discipline
  • 1 years of professional experience in optical engineering (coop internship or entrylevel role acceptable)
  • Familiarity with optical test equipment (e.g. imaging photometer spectroradiometer optical bench) training can be provided
  • Basic understanding of imaging sensors lenses and LCD/backlight technologies
  • Ability to write clear technical notes requirement statements or short proposal sections
  • Strong problemsolving attitude good communication skills and a willingness to learn

Preferred / NicetoHave

  • Masters degree or additional coursework in Optics/Photonics or related field
  • Experience with optical simulation tools (Zemax CodeV OpticStudio) or basic MATLAB scripting
  • Knowledge of video interfaces (HDMI DVI SDI CVBS) and basic videoprocessing concepts
  • Exposure to display metrology (sunlight readability chromaticity uniformity reflectance)
  • Experience with statistical analysis tools (Minitab Excel) for SPC (Cp Cpk)
  • Understanding of mechanical design considerations (DFM tolerancing) for electrooptical hardware
  • Experience with specialty engineering areas (environmental EMI reliability maintainability)
  • Proficiency in MATLAB Minitab or US Army Night Vision Lab NVIPM analytical software
