Job Summary

Job Summary

Responsible for the enforcement and compliance of City codes in the areas of building structural electrical mechanical and plumbing systems. Examine plans to ensure building and zoning codes are being met. Perform field inspections for environmental health hazards confers with contractors engineers architects and the public.

Essential Job Functions

Visually inspects properties for code violations as initiated by a complaint or routine inspection.

Enters data into the computer to generate notice of violations to property owners or to record inspections.

Responds to citizen calls regarding code violations mail information regarding zoning or city regulations.

Research and prepare release of liens to be filed at the courthouse.

Prepares correspondence notifying property owners and tenants of possible violations.

Manages city contracts for the clearing of lots to include bidding projects preparing contracts awarding contracts and preparing payments to contractors.

Conducts inspections to ensure proper environmental compliance in response to complaints.

Provides information to the public and contractors regarding the requirements of zoning and related code and city requirements.

Conducts field inspections of junked and abandoned vehicles abandoned structures and other properties for compliance with city codes.

Works with internal departments on special projects as needed and performs related duties as required.

Responds to natural disaster emergencies as needed by local EOC.

Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.

Performs after hours work as required (nights and weekends).

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

Must obtain Code Enforcement Officer Certification within one (1) year of employment.

Must obtain Food Manager Certification within one (1) year of employment.

High School diploma; or equivalent with up to one (1) year work-related experience.

Must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen at Citys expense.

Must have current valid Class C Drivers License and be insurable.

Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training.

Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with developers citizens and other employees to provide information regarding City Codes and possible violations.

Ability to read and understand materials including City Ordinances professional literature plans correspondence and manuals.

Ability to write reports and correspondence. Skills in math.

Knowledge of office equipment including personal computer.

Knowledge of local state and federal regulations and ordinances.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Ability to sit stand and drive a city issued vehicle to and from work sites. Employees will be exposed to seasonal temperatures while performing on-site inspections.

Ability to lift crawl twist squat and climb while conducting inspections. Employees may be exposed to unleased dogs hostile property and or business owners.

Exposure to intermittent machine or related notice or a combination of unpleasant elements such as odors chemical fumes dust smoke heat cold oil dirt or grease.

Occasional lifting moving or positioning objects up to 60 lbs.
