TITLE Athletic Trainer
REPORTS TO Athletic Director
POSITION SUMMARY
The Athletic Trainer under the direction of the Athletic Director and Assistant Director for Health Services is responsible for provide athletic training services to student athletes coaches and other personnel in the prevention immediate care evaluation treatment rehabilitation reconditioning and management of athletic injuries. The athletic trainer works under the prescriptive direction of the athletes physician in consultation with the Athletic Director and the Assistant Director for Health Services and in accordance with the state athletic training practice act. The athletic training services program will comply with all Monroe Public Schools policies and procedures relating to the health and safety of students.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor Degree in Athletic Training or related field
- Washington state-licensed as an athletic trainer
- Board certification required
- Membership in the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) preferred
- Prior experience in the school setting preferred
- Such other qualifications as the Board and Superintendent may find appropriate
- Current valid CPR and First Aid is required for the position

- Principles goals and objectives of public education
- Curriculum and other developmental programs
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to remain calm in dealing with potentially serious injury to an athlete and to communicate effectively to responding emergency personnel and family members
- Cooperate with school administration in providing for health promoting events as requested
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

- Maintain compliance with general treatment practices in accordance with the state athletic training practice act.
- Provide leadership and direction in the assessment treatment rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries and referral of student athletes to appropriately licensed health care providers as needed.
- Provide leadership and direction in risk management and prevention of athletic injuries appropriate conditioning programs and selection and fitting of protective equipment.
- Maintain student athlete medical record files medical histories pre-participation physical exams and emergency information.
- Manage the athletic training room and establish daily protocols.
- Meet with all coaches and discuss athletic trainer coverage infection control emergency protocol blood borne pathogens and occupational exposure prior to the beginning of each season.
- Provide game coverage as follows: home and away varsity football; all levels of home football; home varsity and junior varsity boys and girls soccer; all levels of home volleyball; all levels of home boys and girls basketball; all levels of home wrestling; all levels of home track and field; travel for post-season play as determined by the Athletic Director and the needs of the team; and any other coverage responsibilities as determined by the Athletic Director.
- Monitor compliance with concussion management guidelines as required by Washington state law including appropriate removal of athlete from play and return to play. Administer baseline and post-injury assessments of student athletes in high risk sports as defined by protocol.
- Conduct physical assessment of athletic injuries determine whether an injured player is capable of continued participation in a game or practice and communicate with coaches regarding status of participation and/or return to play.
- Advise athletes on prevention and care of athletic injuries.
- Ensure program compliance with blood borne pathogen and infectious disease standards in accordance with district policy and procedures. Assist the Athletic Director and Assistant Director for Health Services with issues of infection control as they pertain to the athletic program.
- Manage emergency response practices to comply with district policy and procedures pertaining to emergency treatment and standard precautions.
- Act as liaison between the athletes health care providers the athletes family and the high schools athletic program. Refer any conflicts in injury management to the Athletic Director and Assistant Director for Health Services.
- Provide injury treatment for minor athletic injuries and conditions not requiring care by a physician and in compliance with general treatment practices.
- Provide supervision and evaluation of athletic training student aides. Student practices are limited to those activities and functions as assigned and supervised under the direction of the athletic trainer and in accordance with Monroe Public Schools policy and procedures.
- Maintain a record of all athletic injuries evaluating for contributing factors patterns and action taken as necessary to minimize likelihood of recurrence. Provide an annual written summary of the data to the Athletic Director.
- Report all 911 incidents to the Athletic Director and document injury and action taken on district reporting system.
- Coordinate an annual all-school sports physical event in cooperation with local health care providers.
- Evaluate safety and liability of equipment and facilities on a seasonal and yearly basis. Provide written recommendations to the Athletic Director.
- Provide and maintain appropriately supplied first aid kits to traveling teams and coaches.
- Organize inventory and requisition all training room supplies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.
- Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information at all times.
- Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse harassment intimidation bullying fights substance abuse etc.
- Adheres to federal state and district regulations policies and practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical/mental requirements described are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job and may be supplemented as necessary.
This position involves sitting a portion of the time but does require walking and standing for extended periods on hardwood gym flooring and/or outdoor surfaces. The employee must have the physical ability to tolerate exposure to hot cold humid or windy conditions caused by weather and potentially uneven/slippery surfaces. Exposure to hot cold wet humid or windy conditions caused by weather will be experienced.
This position requires accurate perception of sound near and far vision depth perception; handling and working with educational and psychological materials; and providing oral and written information and reports.
This position may require the employee to exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects. This position may also require with assistance lifting carrying and supporting a student up to 150 pounds.
WORK CALENDAR
The position will work a schedule in coordination with the District student athletic calendar and will include the student school year plus summer pre- and post-season events.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
This position is that of an Athletic Trainer and is a non-represented position primarily based at Monroe High School providing services to the secondary athletic program. The Athletic Trainer may not coach or assist in coaching while serving in the position of athletic trainer.
EVALUATION PROCEDURES
This position shall be evaluated annually by the Assistant Director for Health Services according to currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the employees performance of the above position responsibilities.
