Brief Description of Duties

The IT Systems Administrator is a critical member of the universitys Office of Information Technology (OIT) responsible for maintaining configuring and ensuring the reliable operation of institutional servers systems and infrastructure. This role plays a central part in supporting the technological environment that underpins academic instruction research and administrative operations. The Systems Administrator ensures optimal performance security and availability of IT services by managing server environments (on-premises and cloud) overseeing system upgrades and patches monitoring performance metrics and responding to system alerts and incidents.

Working collaboratively with cross-functional IT teams faculty and administrative units the Systems Administrator supports a diverse portfolio of applications and infrastructure critical to university successincluding email services identity and access management systems storage solutions virtualization platforms and disaster recovery operations. The incumbent also contributes to the planning and execution of IT projects system integrations and continuous improvement efforts aligned with institutional strategic goals.

This position requires a proactive detail-oriented professional with strong technical expertise excellent problem-solving skills and a commitment to providing high-quality service in a dynamic and evolving higher education environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Systems Administration - 30%

  • Assist with administration of Microsoft Windows Server environments and Office 365.
  • Support Azure Active Directory (users groups MFA conditional access).
  • Monitor health system and assist with applying patches updates and hotfixes.
  • Support endpoint management using Intune SCCM or similar tools.
  • Provide basic administration and support of enterprise softphone/VoIP systems.
  • Assist with configuration of users extensions and voicemail accounts.
  • Troubleshoot Tier 1/2 softphone or client-side voice issues.
  • Coordinate with senior telecom engineers for escalations.

Collaboration and Support (Queue and Incident Management) - 25%

  • Work with infrastructure and application teams to fulfill service requests.
  • Assist with data backup/recovery testing and reporting.
  • Participate in cross-training opportunities to broaden technical knowledge.
  • Monitor and manage help desk tickets and incident queues.
  • Provide Tier 1/2 support for system account and access issues.
  • Escalate unresolved issues to senior system or network administrators.

Patching Data & Certificate Management - 20%

  • Apply and document routine Windows updates and security patches.
  • Track patch compliance and escalating critical failures to senior engineers.
  • Assist with vulnerability remediation activities.
  • Assist with daily and scheduled backups including verification and reporting.
  • Perform test restorations and escalate backup failures.
  • Monitor and renew digital certificates for servers applications and endpoints.
  • Document certificate expiration schedules and coordinate renewals.

Documentation & Inventory - 15%

  • Maintain system documentation runbooks and procedures.
  • Update asset inventory for servers software and endpoints.
  • Support audits by providing accurate system and asset records.

Professional Development - 10%

  • Engage in ongoing training and certifications to strengthen Microsoft and Azure skills.
  • Gain exposure to Cisco networking technologies as a secondary development path.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in systems administration help desk support or IT operations.
  • Bachelors degree in information technology Computer Science or a closely related field.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft technologies such as Windows Server Office 365 and Azure AD.
  • Exposure to patch management backup operations and ticketing systems.
  • Familiarity with VoIP or softphone systems preferred.
  • Relevant work experience and or Certifications may substitute for formal education.

Physical Requirements Travel & Equipment Used

  • Must be able to provide support on site as needed to 6 respective UDC Campuses in Washington DC Beltsville MD and Arlington VA.
  • Must be able to reasonably lift and/or move infrastructure equipment.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants unless the person declines the preference points. If selected the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
