The University of the Cumberlands seeks a highly motivated and detail-oriented Junior Cybersecurity Engineer to join our Information Technology Services team. The successful candidate will assist in protecting the Universitys digital assets support information security initiatives monitor network and system security and contribute to the ongoing development of our cybersecurity posture. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career professional to gain hands-on experience in higher education cybersecurity and grow within a collaborative mission-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze network traffic logs and alerts to identify potential security incidents.
  • Participate in vulnerability management including regular scans remediation tracking and patch verification.
  • Support identity and access management (IAM) processes including user provisioning and permissions auditing.
  • Help implement and maintain cybersecurity policies endpoint protection solutions standards and best practices across campus systems.
  • Respond to security events under the guidance of senior cybersecurity staff and assist in incident investigations.
  • Support cybersecurity awareness initiatives for faculty staff and students.
  • Collaborate with network infrastructure and application teams to ensure systems are securely configured.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current cybersecurity threats tools and compliance requirements.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Cybersecurity Computer Science Information Technology or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of network protocols system administration and security concepts.
  • Experience (coursework internship or practical) with identity management antivirus systems or security monitoring tools.
  • Strong analytical troubleshooting and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • Relevant certifications (e.g. CompTIA Security Network or GIAC Security Essentials).
  • Familiarity with SIEM systems (e.g. Splunk Azure Sentinel) endpoint protection or vulnerability management tools.
  • Experience in higher education or enterprise IT environments.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time on-site position located in Williamsburg Kentucky.
  • May require occasional after-hours or weekend work during security incidents or maintenance windows.
