We are currently looking for a Researcher Device Data to join ourScientific Data & Insight Function within the Safety & Surveillance group.

This is a full-timeopportunity on a 12 month fixed term contract/internal move/loan or temporary promotionbasis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade Canary Wharf London E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.

We are currently implementing a flexible hybrid way of working with a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role this can flex up to 12 days a month with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices underpinned by science and research.

The central mission of the Safety & Surveillance portfolio is to protect the public by appropriately identifying assessing and managing the risks associated with medical products.

The group is responsible for delivering robust vigilance processes that can detect monitor and evaluate safety signals across the product lifecycle.

The Scientific Data and Insight function plays a key role in support of this mission. Its purpose is to develop and provide expertise to enhance the analytic capabilities of the Safety & Surveillance group. Activities include supporting the group with epidemiological expertise and assessments identifying and addressing data gaps and developing novel methods for pharmacovigilance. The team also engages in research often in collaboration with external partners and academic institutions regularly publishing papers in the scientific literature.

Monitoring the safety of medical devices is a complex challenge similar to pharmacovigilance but complicated by diverse device types underreporting and fragmented data. We are expanding our device data research to develop better methods for detecting safety signals using real-world data with the goal of understanding device performance and improving patient outcomes.

Whats the role

The Device Data Researcher role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the use of real-world data to support medical device safety and will apply their research and data analysis expertise to support the Agency in making best use of device safety regulatory and master/reference data to protect patient safety and public health effectively and efficiently. This involves leading on data quality and analysis projects identifying novel methods for device epidemiology and communicating complex findings to a variety of stakeholders including the senior leadership of the Agency.

Key responsibilities:

  • Execute and deliver literature reviews on device safety and surveillance methods globally.

  • Use tools such as R Python Julia or SQL to characterise real-world data sources for use in device safety and surveillance

  • Provide analyses of population demographics for devices in the UK.

  • Communicate the outcomes of research a wider audience including senior leaders.

Who are we looking for

Oursuccessful candidatewill have:

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in epidemiology medical statistics or a related discipline.

  • In depth understanding of epidemiological principles and statistical concepts and experience of applying this in practice.

  • Experience of research using health related data sources.

  • Competence in using programming tools such as R Python Julia or SQL to characterise or analyse health data.

  • Proven ability to independently produce well-focused scientific reviews and presentations.
