Position Summary
Thompson Engineering is seeking a Senior Hydraulic Engineer with extensive North Carolina project experience to join our advisory team. The selected candidate will provide expert-level guidance on hydraulic and stormwater modeling regulatory compliance and technical process improvement. This individual will serve as a trusted advisor-supporting both internal teams and clients through review evaluation and enhancement of hydraulic design practices and standards.
The ideal candidate will bring advanced proficiency in HEC-RAS CLOMR/LOMR preparation stormwater design and analysis and FERC/FEMA permitting. This position offers the opportunity to influence organizational practices mentor staff and play a key role in advancing technical excellence across our hydraulic and water resources services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the review and evaluation of complex hydraulic analyses stormwater management systems and drainage infrastructure designs.
- Provide high-level technical guidance on HEC-RAS modeling CLOMR/LOMR submittals and related FEMA and FERC regulatory processes.
- Develop and recommend process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency quality and consistency in hydraulic design workflows.
- Review refine and advise on hydraulic design criteria technical guidelines and standard operating procedures.
- Serve as a subject matter expert to internal teams clients and regulatory partners regarding hydrologic and hydraulic methodologies.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure projects meet design intent regulatory requirements and best practice standards.
- Mentor junior engineers and support professional development initiatives within the Water Resources group.
- Represent Thompson Engineering in technical meetings client discussions and professional forums as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (Masters degree preferred).
- Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license; North Carolina registration required or ability to obtain within six months.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in hydraulic and stormwater engineering with demonstrated experience in North Carolina regulatory environments.
- Advanced technical proficiency in HEC-RAS HEC-HMS FEMA mapping and permitting processes and stormwater design modeling.
- In-depth understanding of FERC and FEMA permitting requirements and submittal processes.
- Proven ability to interpret evaluate and enhance engineering design standards and workflows.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills including preparation of technical memoranda reports and review summaries.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities and deadlines.
- Demonstrated leadership mentorship and client relationship-building capabilities.
