General Maintenance Technician
Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Director of Maintenance
Position: Full time/12-month
Position Summary
Under general supervision the General Maintenance Technician performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance repair and construction tasks across district facilities buildings equipment and grounds. The primary objective is to ensure that all school district properties are safe functional attractive and well-maintained to support the educational environment.
Minimum Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Two (2) or more years of paid experience performing general building maintenance repair construction or work in a specialized skilled trade (e.g. carpentry plumbing HVAC electrical).
Experience in a school district commercial or institutional environment ispreferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of the position but are not all-inclusive:
A. Facilities & Building Maintenance
Plumbing: Perform routine and emergency repairs to plumbing systems including clearing clogged drains and sewer lines repairing or replacing toilets sinks faucets water heaters and drinking fountains.
Carpentry: Perform minor rough and finish carpentry including repairing and replacing doors windows locks hinges door closures cabinetry shelves and installing floor/ceiling tiles.
Electrical: Perform basic repairs and installation such as replacing light fixtures ballasts switches outlets and ensuring minor electrical circuits and equipment are operational (consistent with certification/local code).
Painting & Drywall: Prepare surfaces for painting apply paint stain or other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces and patch/repair drywall plaster and masonry.
HVAC & Mechanical: Assist skilled technicians with preventative maintenance on HVAC units (heating ventilation and air conditioning) including changing filters replacing belts and lubricating motors.
Minor Construction: Participate in minor remodeling construction and renovation projects as a crew member or independently.
B. Preventative Maintenance & Safety
Implement track and perform scheduled preventative maintenance tasks on facilities and equipment to maximize asset lifespan and reduce the frequency of emergency repairs.
Inspect facilities equipment and systems to identify potential safety hazards maintenance needs and code violations; report findings to the supervisor.
Ensure all work is performed in strict compliance with applicable federal state and local codes including OSHA safety regulations.
Participate in and maintain documentation for required safety training (e.g. lock-out/tag-out ladder safety use of PPE).
C. Grounds and Equipment Support
Assist with basic groundskeeping duties as assigned including mowing trimming weeding snow removal and general landscape maintenance.
Perform repairs and maintenance on playground equipment athletic facilities and perimeter fencing.
Operate and maintain a variety of manual and power tools light-duty vehicles and equipment safely.
D. Administration & Communication
Respond to maintenance requests and work orders promptly prioritizing assignments based on safety and operational needs.
Accurately document all work performed including time spent materials used and necessary follow-up actions utilizing the districts work order system.
Coordinate and communicate effectively with school principals custodial staff district personnel and outside contractors.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods materials tools and equipment used in the building and mechanical trades.
Demonstrated skill in at least two maintenance disciplines (e.g. basic plumbing electrical carpentry painting).
Ability to estimate time and materials required for work orders.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Licenses and Other Requirements
Possession of a valid State Drivers License and a driving record insurable by the Districts carrier.
Must pass a post-offer pre-employment physical examination and criminal background check.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Physical: Regularly required to stand walk bend stoop climb kneel crouch and reach overhead for extended periods. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors involving regular exposure to all weather conditions noise vibration dust oils fumes and chemicals.
Hazards: Work involves the use of power tools ladders/lifts (working from heights) and exposure to potential electrical and mechanical hazards.
Schedule: May be required to work on evenings weekends or holidays to respond to emergency situations.
