Shelter Veterinarian Assistant Location: Auburn Valley Humane Society Pay Range: $19.00/hour $22.00/hour Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly) Reports To: CEO of Operations and Animal Care About Us Auburn Valley Humane Society (AVHS) and Northwest Spay & Neuter Center are committed to enriching the lives of companion animals and the people who love them through animal sheltering high-quality veterinary services and community engagement. Together we strive to set the standard for excellence in animal welfare. At AVHS we only contract with the City of Auburn and maintain a target capacity of around 50 animals to ensure quality care. Our facility includes partialized kennels for improved housing and enrichment two outdoor play yards and a robust volunteer base that supports daily operations. Dogs are walked at least three times per day and enrichment is built into our routines to support behavioral wellness. We believe in compassionate progressive care and we value our people as much as the animals we serve. Position Summary The Shelter Veterinarian Assistant is responsible for providing appropriate animal handling and care within the work environment in a manner that aligns with Fear Free Training and AVHS policies. Responsibilities: - To learn and follow AVHSs policies procedures and city county and state requirements regarding animal welfare.
- To establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with staff members volunteers and other departments.
- To act in a manner consistent with Fear Free and similar animal handling practices.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the facility including cages kennels and common areas in accordance with biosecurity principles and organizational policy.
- To assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with surgical and nursing care laboratory procedures and medication administration.
- To provide daily care of animals in the facility including feeding bathing hygiene exercise and behavior support.
- Perform medical and nursing tasks as assigned such as blood draws urine collection placing IV catheters monitoring vital signs of an anesthetized patient and other tasks as legally permitted.
- Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.
- Maintain inventory of supplies.
- Monitor and treat animals as advised by the veterinarian or other suitable delegates and communicate in the best interest of the animal.
- To professionally communicate with empathy and in a judgement-free manner with the public to include but not limited to clients fosters adopters and animal owners.
- To perform other reasonable duties time to time as assigned.
- To maintain a general working knowledge of other departments locations functions and their contribution to the organization as a whole.
- To remain current on daily communication and time sensitive issues.
Qualifications: - Passion for the mission of Auburn Valley Humane Society. Knowledge of and commitment to animal welfare issues.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
Skills and Experience: - Preferred work experience as a veterinary assistant especially in a shelter or high volume spay/neuter clinic.
- Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with diverse staff volunteers and community in a professional pleasant respectful and courteous manner.
- Ability to handle and assess potentially dangerous or fractious dogs and cats.
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions verbal and written in repetitious tasks and one-off situations.
- Demonstrated experience in working with a diverse staff in a positive friendly collaborative and inclusive manner.
Computer Skills: - Comfortable learning new systems including online information systems and shelter/clinic software.
Physical Demands: - Individuals will frequently be required to speak publicly; stand walk or sit for extended periods reach bend or stoop regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
