Job Summary

Purpose Statement:Provides access to communication for deaf and hard of hearing students by providing individually based interpreting/transliterating in an educational setting; performs related work as Functions:The essential function of an employee in this class is to facilitate communication between school staff and deaf and hearing-impaired students by interpreting between English speakers and an appropriate system of communication based on individual student needs as determined by an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Paraprofessional Interpreters primary role is to help the student transcend the protected school environment into the adult world. Although the primary job function of interpretation is the same at both levels the responsibilities and duties vary. At the elementary level the Interpreter is significantly involved in assisting with language comprehension content area tutoring and materials accommodation. At the secondary level more responsibility is placed on the interpretation of English speech in complex subject areas often requiring special preparation or orientation for students and teachers. At both levels the Interpreter serves as an advocate for the student and an assistant to the teacher to facilitate communication. Work is conducted independently and performed under the general supervision of a school Principal or assigned teacher. The essential duties of this class are performed in a general classroom/school :Interpret/transliterate in all school settings including but not limited to classroom instruction tutoring sessions small group instruction and discussions conferences meetings extracurricular activities and social communicate the goal of the lesson environmental events and all aspects of meaning content and discussion by incorporating appropriate facial grammar linguistic cues audible comments and environmental fingerspelling appropriately to introduce and reinforce new vocabulary and to convey English words with no sign for student comprehension through classroom interactions and probing students as they learn and accept increased responsibility for their own educational needs and learn more about the school please visit all application materials via email to the following application materials:ResumeCover letterASL Certifications- Including EIPA Assessment Results
