Job Summary

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the worlds busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Bureau of Fire Prevention cultivates a safer city for its citizens visitors and first responders by preventing loss of life and property damage from fire and other emergencies. We accomplish this 24/7 by identifying fire and life safety hazards; creating revising and enforcing the New York City Fire Code; reviewing plans for critical systems designed to protect and alert building occupants; licensing qualified companies to install and service fire protection equipment and systems; certifying individuals to monitor fire safety conditions; and educating individuals and businesses about fire addition the Bureau of Fire Prevention is critical partner with the Bureau of Fire Operations (Firefighters) and Bureau of Fire Investigations (Fire Marshals) providing assistance and guidance during post-fire incidents and investigations; and coordinating with other City agencies on matters concerning fire and life safety. The Bureau consists of Fire Protection Inspectors lawyers engineers explosives experts and Fire Officers work together to save lives in New York City.

The Fire Department City of New York (FDNY) seeks two (2) full-time Supervising Blasting Inspectors in the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Under general supervision the successful candidates will: Perform responsible work in the inspection program involving blasting sites and procedures to protect the existing buildings sub-surface utilities and structures from the effects of vibrations and concussion of blasting operations and for the control of all explosives used stored or transported in New York City. Monitor pyrotechnic/special effects shows and work closely with the movie fireworks and entertainment industries. Perform related work as required.

SUPERVISING BLASTING INSPECTOR - 31840


Qualifications :

1. Eight years of full-time satisfactory experience as a blaster or blasting foreperson in a job requiring a blasters certificate of fitness issued by the New York City Fire Department or if the experience was gained in another jurisdiction by the appropriate government authority. At least 1 year of this experience must have been in blasting operations as a supervisor of blasting inspectors or site superintendent; or

2. Ten years of full-time satisfactory experience as a fire inspector fire marshal explosives inspector or law enforcement officer that was directly involved in the inspection or management of a program regulating the safe transportation use handling sale storage and manufacture of explosives fireworks pyrotechnic / flame / special effects in a city state or federal jurisdiction; or

3. Education and/or experience equivalent to 1 or 2 above. Undergraduate education from an accredited university in explosives engineering explosives technology or mining engineering may be substituted for non-supervisory experience at a rate of 30 semester credits for 1 year of experience up to a limit of 4 years.

License Requirement

A Certificate of Fitness as a Blaster (E-10) or Pyrotechnic Special Effects Operator (E-18) issued by the New York City Fire Department.

Must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York.
