| General Definition of Work: Performs complex skilled and difficult technical work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles school buses and other equipment for the school division and county vehicle fleet; does related work as required. |
Essential Functions:- Provides general vehicular maintenance and performs routine repair;
- Diagnoses problems performs major and minor repairs overhauls maintains and does replacement work on school buses cars trucks and other equipment;
- Installs replacement parts and provides appropriate adjustments and settings;
- Overhauls brakes ignition systems and other vehicle assemblies;
- Tunes engines using standard testing equipment;
- Performs repairs or installation of assemblies or complicated parts;
- Operates various types of shop equipment: machinery precision instruments laptop computer specialized tools;
- Operates computerized fleet maintenance program to document labor on work orders and examine vehicle history;
- Responds to road calls and other emergency calls for service as needed;
- Provides technical advice and assistance to coworkers;
- May recommend purchases and/or retention of vehicles and equipment based on specifications and requirements;
- May train technical and service staff;
- Performs related duties as required.

| Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline/diesel engines power trains brake systems electronic assemblies and motorized equipment; Thorough knowledge of the characteristics repair and maintenance needs of a wide variety of automotive and heavy/light duty equipment; Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with a large scale shop operation; Thorough knowledge of diagnostic techniques in fault analysis; Ability to diagnose mechanical defects and operate and comprehend technical equipment; Ability to establish harmonious working relationships with fellow employees; Ability to comprehend oral and written directions; Ability to use laptop computer/email. English language proficiency is required per Code of Virginia 46.2-341.14. |
Education and Experience:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school or vocational school as well as at least two years experience in repairing and maintaining heavy/light duty powered equipment; ASE certification preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health condition as certified by a competent medical authority. Must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete the Virginia Education Department training curriculum for school bus drivers and obtain a Commercial Drivers License with appropriate school bus endorsements within the probationary period. Required to wear uniforms provided by Albemarle County. Possession of or ability to obtain Virginia State Inspections License within six months. |
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts:Work is typically performed in an open bay bus maintenance facility. Frequent bending stooping and crawling to inspect on and under vehicles as necessary. Must be physically capable of lifting at least 100 pounds. Safety glasses and leather steel toe shoes are required to be worn and must meet OSHA guidelines. Frequent contact with Fleet Manager and Floor Supervisor; occasional contact with local government and other school division employees. |
Evaluation:Will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness to carry out the responsibilities as outlined. |
