As our Master thesis student youll have many opportunities to try things youve never done before. 

We are now looking for a student who wants to write their Master thesis at IKEA of Sweden from mid-January to June 2026. Your key assignment is to investigate state-of-the-art solutions to improve our Home Smart sensor range and build proof of concepts of these solutions.     

Your new assignment 

We at IKEA of Sweden have identified possible improvements to our sensor range of which we believe users of a smart home would greatly benefit from. Not all the solutions fit in with IKEAs low-cost range (we want it to be for the many!) but we believe that deeper investigation into technical solutions could give us good insights into how to achieve that. Your assignment would be to deep dive into possible solutions and together with the team decide on which solutions to further investigate. You will also build proof of concepts for these solutions.

The deliverables are: 

• Fact based selection of solutions.
• Proof of concept for some of the selected solutions.
• An end report written in English. 

What wed like you to bring to the table 

We think that you:  

• Know electronics and software development good enough to construct prototypes.
• Have an interest in the smart home.
• Are probably studying mechatronics electronics or software engineering.
• Are fluent in English.

This assignment belongs to IKEA of Sweden more specifically the Range Area Lighting and Home Electronics. The work will be carried out hybrid where approximately one day per week in the office (either Älmhult or Malmö) is preferred.

Please note: To apply for this thesis assignment you must be enrolled in a thesis course at a Swedish university.
