Job Summary

Introduction:

This is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact maintaining a safe and sustainable environment for groundbreaking science as Safety Engineer and future Departmental Safety Officer (DSO) and Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).

Functions:

  • Support the Department Head in fulfilling safety-related obligations and in implementing CERNs Safety Policy and related objectives.
  • Monitor and report on safety and environmental performance ensuring that departmental activities comply with host-state regulations CERN Safety Policy and best practices.
  • Coordinate and contribute to risk assessments inspections audits and incident investigations ensuring that risks are identified lessons learned are captures and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Ensure radiological protection within the department coordinating with RP experts and contractors on radiation-area interventions participating in safety reviews and approval workflows and overseeing optimisation and radioactive material storage.
  • Oversee the establishment maintenance and consistency of safety documentation (Prevention Plans Safety Files Joint Inspection Visits) across SCE activities and projects.
  • Coordinate the work of safety officers and safety support officers within the department and liaising with HSE services and DSOs from other departments to ensure coherence and cross-departmental consistency in safety measures and practices.
  • Represent the department in internal and external safety advisory bodies acting as the main contact for safety-related matters with host authorities and contractors.
  • Promote awareness training and continuous improvement in safety performance across all SCE activities.

Qualifications :

Masters degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of health safety environment engineering or a related field.

Additional nationally recognised qualification in health safety or environmental management is an asset.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in applying and monitoring of safety and environmental protection rules ideally within complex technical or construction environments in Switzerland or France.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead safety coordination for multidisciplinary projects including incident investigations risk assessments and management of safety documentation while collaborating effectively with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. contractors authorities).
  • Familiarity with European and host-state regulations relevant to occupational safety and environmental protection.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety (ionizing and non-ionizing) would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Environmental protection: and radiation safety.
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment: and incident analysis (in particular fault tree analysis).
  • Occupational safety risk management and safety conformity assessment.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French with a commitment to learn the other language.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

Working Hours: 40 hours per week

Job Flexibility: Hybrid

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Work during nights Sundays and official holidays when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Shift work when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Stand-by duty when required by the needs of the Organization.
