Job Scope
The Additive Manufacturing Machining Specialist (AMMS) plays a key role in the production and continuous improvement of custom patient-specific medical implants and instruments. This position supports the full manufacturing lifecyclefrom machining and 3D printing through downstream finishingensuring precision quality and compliance with regulatory standards.
Working under minimal supervision the AMMS collaborates closely with Manufacturing and Quality Engineering to produce components to specification troubleshoot machining and process issues and implement technical solutions efficiently. The role may include developing and refining CNC programs using CAD/CAM software integrating new processes or equipment and providing technical guidance within the Digital Surgery Department to advance process capability and production readiness.
Responsibilities
- Perform setup and operation of manufacturing equipment including CNC mills laser marker 3D printer anodization passivation and packaging systems to produce patient-specific implants and instruments.
- Accurately set up CNC machines to prove out newly created programs ensuring safe operation and identifying potential programming or machining issues.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing and Quality Engineering teams to develop validate and continuously improve production processes (IQ OQ PQ) within the Patient Match department.
- Create edit and optimize CNC programs using CAM software or manual methods for production parts fixturing or tooling.
- Participate in process validation activities equipment testing and troubleshooting to support production readiness.
- Design and set up fixturing and gauging systems for finishing operations.
- Create and maintain supporting documentation including work instructions setup guides and process records to ensure production efficiency and regulatory compliance.
- Use precision measuring tools (micrometers calipers gage pins) to inspect parts and verify conformance to specifications.
- Identify and report process deviations or equipment issues and perform basic preventative and corrective maintenance as needed.
- Ensure compliance with FDA regulations ISO 13485 standards and Acumed Work Instructions and SOPs.
- Complete assignments within established timeframes and maintain high quality standards with minimal nonconformances.
- Maintain a clean safe and organized work environment and complete administrative duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; technical certification or associate degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in CNC machining 3D printing or medical device manufacturing required; 8 years of CNC setup experience preferred for external candidates.
- Experience within Acumed as a Level 3 Machinist who has met the competencies of the Acumed Machinist Career Ladder preferred for internal candidates.
- Familiarity with patient-specific or customized manufacturing workflows and process development in a regulated industry (medical device preferred).
- Demonstrated competency in CNC machine setup troubleshooting and editing or creating CNC programs using CAM software or manual G and M code programming.
- Ability to hand-code or modify existing programs to achieve pre-determined outcomes.
- Working knowledge of macro variable programming and software systems related to machining operations.
- Proficiency in interpreting blueprints GD&T and using precision inspection tools (micrometers calipers gage pins).
- Familiarity with 3D CAD tools 3D printing systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- Understanding of GMPs FDA regulations and ISO 13485 standards.
- Experience following validation protocols (IQ OQ PQ) and accurately documenting results.
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining high-quality standards and compliance with established work instructions and SOPs.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with both engineering and production teams.
- Self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision.
- Detail-oriented with solid organizational and time-management abilities.
- Analytical mindset with a practical approach to troubleshooting and process improvement.
