Position overview
The OCCRP Editor Data is a senior editorial leader responsible for directing the organizations data journalism and data-driven investigations. This role manages a diverse team of data journalists guiding their work on complex cross-border investigations into crime and corruption. The Data Editor is a key strategic partner for the entire newsroom blending team management technical oversight and hands-on editorial guidance to uncover stories hidden in data and present them with impact.
Core Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Management: Lead mentor and manage OCCRPs team of data journalists. Foster a collaborative innovative and supportive environment that promotes skill development and high-quality work.
- Resource Management & Technical Development:
- Collaborate with the Research Director and Research team in allocating resources effectively to meet project deadlines and strategic goals.
- Coordinate with the Data desk manager to ensure the team stays abreast of new tools and techniques in data journalism and guide their adoption.
- Data Investigation Strategy: Develop and execute a strategy for data-driven investigations that aligns with OCCRPs mission. Work with the team to conceptualize and pitch ambitious investigations and oversee their execution from data acquisition and analysis to publication.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work in close partnership with Regional Editors the Editor for Strategic Projects and investigative/core teams to integrate data journalism into all facets of OCCRPs reporting. Act as the primary liaison between the data journalists and the rest of the newsroom to identify opportunities for data analysis to support and elevate stories.
- Editorial & Technical Oversight: Provide editorial guidance on data projects to ensure they are journalistically sound accurate and compelling. Uphold rigorous standards for data integrity analysis and methodology.
Measures of Success
This role is accountable for leading impactful data journalism and integrating data analysis throughout the organization. Success will be evaluated annually based on the following measures:
- Quantitative Impact:
- Data-Led Investigations: Oversee the successful completion of at least four major data-driven investigations annually that meet OCCRPs standards for quality and significance.
- Collaborative Support: Ensure the data journalists make significant contributions (e.g. analysis visualizations data products) to a high volume of investigations and other story formats led by other teams.
- Team Output: The team consistently produces high-quality data visualizations interactive features and structured data sets for publication and network use.
- Leadership & Collaboration (Qualitative):
- Story Quality: Data-driven stories are consistently well-reported methodologically sound factually irrefutable and add significant value to OCCRPs journalism.
- Team Growth: Data journalists under the editors mentorship show measurable growth in their technical skills reporting techniques and editorial judgment.
- Strategic Integration: The data journalists are viewed as essential proactive partners by regional and investigative teams and data journalism is effectively integrated into the newsrooms workflow and strategic planning.
- Innovation: The team is actively exploring and implementing new tools technologies and methodologies to advance OCCRPs investigative capabilities.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience: Minimum of 7 years in journalism with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role focused on data journalism.
- Leadership: Proven experience managing and mentoring a team of journalists with diverse technical and reporting skills.
- Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of data acquisition and cleaning methods analysis and programing (e.g. SQL Python/R) data visualization tools data pipelines open-source intelligence (OSINT).
- Familiarity with Investigative Tools: Knowledge of platforms like Aleph OCCRPs research platform or similar data analysis/investigation tools.
- Investigative Acumen: A strong journalistic background with a demonstrated ability to find and develop compelling stories from complex datasets.
- Collaboration: Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical teams in a fast-paced cross cultural environment.
- Strategic Vision: Ability to think strategically about data can be leveraged to advance large-scale long-term investigative projects.
