Job Summary

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America serving Cook DuPage Will Lake Kane and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe reliable and efficient commuter service.

Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metras fixed assets such as buildings stations bridges track electrical telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects and Communications and Maintenance.

Duties include digging installing wire/cable and working outside in different weather conditions.

This is a Union position. Starting pay rates may vary based on entry rates in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Applicants must possess at least one (1) of the following requirements:

Must possess an Associates degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Or in lieu of specified degree must have two (2) years of experience in the installation repair and maintenance of electrical equipment.

Applicants must also:

  1. Have ability to bend stoop lift carry and move weight up to 75 lbs. and must be able to distinguish colors (red blue green and yellow).

  2. Be available to work different shifts holidays and weekends and travel to different work locations within Metras six county regions.

Preferences:

  1. Experience with operating equipment e.g. backhoes and trenchers.
  2. Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
  3. Computer skills.
