Job Summary
The Laboratory Testing Manager will assist in managing and maintaining the day-to-day activities of all Laboratory Testing including staff assets. The Laboratory Testing Manager will need to use their experience and judgment to ensure all quality control mechanisms in the laboratory comply with blood bank cGMP FDA CLIA California Department of Health and AABB regulations and standards. Must be comfortable in a fast-paced dynamic team environment. The testing manager will report directly to the Director of Hospital Services and will collaborate with teams across the organization to ensure Laboratory Testing excellence in supplying and distributing safe blood products with the utmost quality and fiscal integrity. Persons filling this position are responsible for the oversight of outsourced testing product quality control testing and patient testing.
Essential Responsibilities
- Maintains competency and proficiency in all reference laboratory testing.
- Assist in Quality Control and maintenance of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) document review data log review and instrumentation review.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers regulatory agencies or members of the business community.
- Participate in selecting new Clinical Laboratory Scientists. Help evaluate new techniques and procedures in terms of space and personnel requirements method comparison cost analysis and the establishment of reference intervals.
- Monitor compliance with Laboratory Safety Policies.
- Serve as a point person/expert for IRL staff including assistance in difficult donor or patient workups.
- Assist QA with all reactive donor testing including confirmatory testing results donor notification and lookbacks.
- Review QC monthly and recognize factors that contribute to any variance make judgments concerning variance and take appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision. Assure proper calibration and correlations of necessary laboratory equipment.
- Manage staff work and evaluate staff competencies and performance.
- Perform document and ensure regular timely maintenance as well as PM (Preventive Maintenance) of instrumentation.
- Assist in the training of new testing staff on all SOPs instrumentation function BECS workflow including basic concepts and workflow in reference lab (if no designee has been determined).
- Review testing staff training forms records and competencies.
- Assist with documentation review; including steps involved with lot release of blood products.
- Assist with review and update of SOPs.
- Assist with inventory control including and ordering supplies and reagents as needed. Ensure supplies are rotated and not expiring on shelves.
- Assist all laboratory staff in preparing for inspections.
- Demonstrate a commitment to working in a strong team environment.
- Demonstrate adherence to employee handbook and all company policies.

Qualifications and Skills
Education/Licenses/Experience
- Possession Bachelor of Science degree (B.S) in medical technology or related science with completion of an accredited Clinical Laboratory (hospital based) program
- Possess and maintain current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) licensure
- A minimum 5 years experience in Blood Bank/Transfusion Services with experience and expertise in IRL
- A minimum 3 years experience in leadership training and/or management roles
- Certified SBB/BB or equivalent preferred
Skills
- Exceptional communication skills both oral and written motivationally affective with collaborative outcomes including experience in conflict resolution management
- High attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and adapt rapidly to changing priorities and tasks
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods (e.g. desk work meetings).
- Occasional standing and walking
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing writing using a mouse and operating standard office equipment
- Infrequent exposure to extreme temperatures (cold). Could be required to enter walk-in freezer at 32F or lower
- Close vision for reading reports screens documents spreadsheets and emails.
Working Conditions
- Low to moderate noise level
- Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves mask or goggles when handling samples and products
