Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of experience as a mechanic.
- Valid Florida drivers license.
- Valid Florida commercial drivers license (CDL) or the ability to obtain:
- Class B;
- Passenger vehicle endorsement (P);
- Air brakes endorsement;
- Tank vehicle endorsement (N);
- Hazardous materials endorsement (H).
- Valid Florida Department of Education School Bus Safety Inspector Certificate or the ability to obtain.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification.
Relevant work experience or education may be substituted to satisfy minimum qualifications.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Clear and concise oral and written communication skills; organizational and management skills.
- Knowledge of pertinent regulations policies and procedures for the functional area of assignment.
- Knowledge of HIPAA Public Records Sunshine Law FERPA and other laws/regulations related to student and employee privacy public information and records retention.
- Knowledge of and experience with industry-standard equipment materials practices computers and applications.
- Ability to professionally and effectively respond to customer needs and requests for service or assistance.
- Ability to acquire state certification as a school bus inspector in accordance with State Board of Education Rule 6A-3.017.
- Ability to follow the Florida State School Bus Inspection Manual for inspection of the Districts fleet of buses.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks requiring an understanding of and proficiency in mechanical repair.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions including service manuals for diagnostic procedures.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and handle material by lifting pushing bending or stretching.
- Ability to comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements.

Responsibilities
- Perform required vehicle safety inspections.
- Repair and overhaul automobiles buses trucks and other light and heavy equipment.
- Rebuild the mechanical electrical and hydraulic automotive equipment when needed.
- Perform required monthly inspections on all District vehicles and prepare related monthly inspection reports in a timely manner.
- Transport fuel and operate service vehicles to provide emergency road service work to buses and other vehicles and equipment when needed.
- Prepare related records and reports in a timely manner.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
- Work cooperatively with other mechanics to ensure timely repairs.
- Adhere to the instructions contained in the department directives and abide by School Board policies.
- Adhere to good safety procedures.
- Register with the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Maintain driver and CDL licensure and required endorsements.
