The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fish is recruiting
for a Fish Culturist 1 located in Anchorage at William Jack Hernandez Sportfish Hatchery!
What you will be doing:
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fish is seeking a full-time permanent Fish Culturist 1 located at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery. The primary duty of this position is to provide routine fish culture care for the Chinook and Coho salmon smolt in the recirculation systems. The work schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday. On Saturdays this position is unsupervised and must be able to work independently and deal with alarms and any problems that may happen at the hatchery.
The key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
Responsible for all of the Smolt Production Areas functions in the absence of the Smolt Production Supervisor.
Training and overseeing of one College Intern 2 and a two month Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 including participating in the hiring process and fish culture training.
Monitoring and management of fish health water quality and water treatment systems.
Performing monthly size samples and subsequent adjustments to feeding rations.
Collection of eggs from Chinook and Coho salmon on-site and at remote stream locations.
Daily fish culture routine of cleaning tanks and data entry.
Assisting other fish culture staff with hatchery activities such as transporting fish gamete collection and other rearing and incubation programs.
Purchasing and maintaining supplies and materials while strictly adhering to project budgets and following SOA procurement policies.

The working conditions you can expect:
This position is based in Anchorage at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery. The work schedule will be Tuesday-Saturday 8-4.
The applicant must be able to work Tuesday thru Saturday as part of the regular work schedule and occasional holidays.
Over-night travel is required for some stocking activities.
Applicant must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class B Alaska Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with N-Tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire.

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge skills and abilities:
Knowledge of hatchery operations.
Knowledge of water quality testing.
Experience collecting biological samples from fish including length sex otolith extraction and genetic samples.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including Excel and Word.

This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.
For those not already certified training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee:
Valid State of Alaska CDL Class B with tanker endorsement to be obtained within one year of hire (see Commercial Drivers License requirements below).

Current First Aid and CPR Certification
Substitution:
Four years of any combination of progressively responsible work experience in aquaculture or mariculture and/or post-secondary education from an accredited college (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) in aquaculture aquatic ecology fish biology fisheries fisheries resources fisheries sciences and management fisheries technology marine biology natural resource management oceanography or veterinary science will substitute for the required bachelors degree.

COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE (CDL) REQUIREMENT
Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class B Alaska Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with N-Tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire.This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383) within 12 month of hire to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
