Position Summary 

The Krembil Brain Institute at Toronto Western Hospital is home to one of the worlds largest and most comprehensive multidisciplinary teams working hand-in-hand to prevent and confront problems of the brain and spine. One in three Canadians will experience a brain-related condition such as Parkinsons Alzheimers Epilepsy Stroke or Concussion in their lifetime.

The Neurovascular Unit (NVU) within the Krembil Brain Institute (KBI) program is the first of its kind in Canada. We champion a vision of right environment for the right patient at the right time. It is a world-class care centre offering 40 in-patient beds including 20 High Acuity Level II beds for patients who require specialized interventions and monitoring. The Neurovascular Unit was designated as the District Stroke Centre for the West Toronto Region. 

In 2017 NVU achieved stroke distinction from the Accreditation Canada for demonstrating national leadership clinical excellence and commitment for continuous improvement of care for neurovascular patients. As a member of the UHN and the Nursing Multi-disciplinary Team the Registered Nurse for the Neurovascular Unit practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession.

Reporting to the Unit Manager as a member of the multi-disciplinary team on the NVU the Patient Care Coordinator acts as a resource for the multidisciplinary team. This position plays a leadership role by mentoring and providing direction ongoing development and preceptorship to team members.

Furthermore as a member of the Neurovascular Unit you will have a variety of career development opportunities such as;

  • Obtain experience with rare and unique patient population and interventions in our Krembil program

Duties

Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) Responsibilities/Duties

  • Performing human resources financial and administrative responsibilities to ensure efficient and effective unit operation
  • Liaising with manager and P&C team members for recruitment of new employees including but not limited to: screening applicants booking interviews participating in interviews reviewing references and liaising with potential candidates
  • Supporting administrative onboarding process such as registering candidates for e-Learning or coordination with APNE for onboarding processes.
  • Liaising with members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure high standards of quality and optimal management of patient care outcomes
  • Contributing to nurses students and ancillary staff development by promoting and ensuring a supportive and collaborative learning environment within the service(s)/cluster area based on the principles of adult learning and practice standards
  • Performing cross-functional duties consistent with the job classification as assigned or requested

Qualifications :

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing required Masters preferred/prepared
  • Three years nursing experience in a tertiary care ICU
  • Three (3) years Nursing experience in a tertiary Acute Care hospital
  • Acute Care Certificate or Critical Care Certification preferred
  • Acute Neuroscience experience preferred
  • CAN Certification in Neuroscience preferred
  • Previous leadership experience preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities required with prior leadership experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability towards team building and collaboration
  • Effective organizational interpersonal and communication skills
  • Client service oriented with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task
  • Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Clinical and patient teaching skills
  • Excellent time management skills
