Role Summary

As part of the DUT project LIGHT - Looking for Integrated Solutions for Healthy PEDs Idiap Research Institute seeks qualified candidates for a postdoctoral researcher position at the intersection of machine learning and physical modelling. This researcher will investigate energy and comfort in different urban case-studies by using and improving our urban simulator CitySim. Together we will:
develop methodological advancements in integrated urban planning and modelling (including the refinement of CitySim)
work on the case studies to produce new knowledge concerning the trade-offs synergies and key variables that decide whether renovation projects are successful in combining climate health and social inclusion objectives
ensure the production of a set of attractive and viable scenarios that combine densification GBI climate neutrality health and inclusion in the best possible ways
provide an easy software tool which will allow to identify and test possible scenarios for combining climate health and inclusion objectives in the local contexts of other urban communities.

The successful Postdoc candidate will join the Energy Informatics group at Idiap under the supervision of Dr Jerome Kaempf. The position is planned to be for a duration of 3 years provided there is successful progress. Starting date is to be negotiated but expected to be January 2026.

Duties include
Carry out research as stated in the assigned project(s) and follow the evolution of project(s)
Fulfil project-related assignments (evaluations deliverables ..) as requested
Publish results (in journal papers and conferences; favour joint publications with other Idiap staff and/or project partners)
If required participate in project meetings and boards
When appropriate assume leading role as Idiap contact point or work package leader
Help supervise PhD students and interns in collaboration with supervisors
Participate in various Idiap activities and projects as requested by supervisor(s) or Idiap management

Role profile

The ideal applicant should have finished or be close to finishing a PhD dissertation on a topic related to urban physics or urban data science. Applicants should demonstrate excellent research experience in their field strong publication record and ability to do creative and significant research with relative level of autonomy. Finally applicants should have some knowledge in machine learning and/or physical modelling with good programming skills (C/C and/or Python) and the Linux environment. Experience in writing scientific papers participating to conferences or working in multi-disciplinary teams in an internationally oriented environment would be a plus.

Required language(s):

Fluency in English. French is a plus
