Science Correspondent

We are seeking a talented Science Correspondent to join the Chemistry World news team on a fulltime temporary basis (expected to be 12 months). In this role you will be at the forefront of reporting on the latest developments discoveries and trends in the chemical sciences creating engaging content across multiple platforms for our large international audience of chemical scientists.

At the RSC we embrace flexibility and offer hybrid working which means our teams come together when they need to collaborate.

Although this role is contractually based at our Cambridge office you will be able to work from home within the UK with the expectation that you will attend the office as needed for your role.

In this role it is expected that you will attend the office on an ad-hoc basis. If you need flexible working arrangements please outline this in your application. Travel to conferences and events both domestic and international will be a routine part of this role.

Key Responsibilities:

• Source investigate write and edit up-to-the-moment news and features on trends developments and discoveries in the chemical sciences
• Build and maintain a network of contacts to identify compelling stories for the magazine
• Attend conferences press conferences visit companies and institutions and conduct interviews ensuring diversity wherever possible
• Research and write news stories and features on a wide range of chemical science-related topics to a high level of accuracy and quality and to agreed deadlines
• Keep abreast of current developments in chemistry the chemical industry science policy and matters relating to chemists
• Plan story concepts determine the focus of individual articles and develop story ideas for the magazine
• Edit proofread and prepare pages of the print edition
• Participate in videos blogs and podcasts on a regular basis

Qualifications and Skills:

• Degree-level qualification in a scientific field (chemical sciences preferred)
• Demonstrable experience of pitching developing and writing stories on a range of scientific topics in a journalistic style with excellent attention to detail
• Self-starter with motivation to find and investigate ideas for stories and develop contacts and sources
• Good knowledge of the latest themes and developments in the chemical sciences and the wider chemistry community
• Good time management and organisation to deliver assignments and workload across short and long-term projects and with competing priorities
