The Production/Material Handling Lead works on the production floor and assists the plant management team in overseeing and coordinating daily operations. This position ensures that production targets are met efficiently and safely while maintaining high standards of quality employee performance and equipment functionality.
The Lead will ensure all production work centers are properly staged with the correct materials for scheduled jobs inventory is accurately labeled and organized and finished products are counted and protected from shipping damage. This role also plays a key part in supporting continuous improvement initiatives and ensuring compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
Material Handlers are part of a cross-functional fully integrated team focused on the storage packaging and movement of product to support operations maintain inventory accuracy and achieve 100% on-time delivery
Responsibilities
Safety & Compliance
Enforce compliance with all safety standards PPE use and OSHA regulations.
Participate in and lead safety audits.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment following 5S and housekeeping standards.
Quality Control & Process Improvement
Ensure products meet quality specifications and regulatory requirements.
Support Lean Manufacturing Six Sigma and continuous improvement projects.
Analyze and improve workflows cycle times and process bottlenecks.
Material Handling Responsibilities
Ensure all production resources have the necessary materials to run scheduled jobs.
Identify and maintain staging areas for efficient operator access.
Stage materials in designated areas to support continuous production flow.
Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure aisles remain free of clutter.
Maintain accurate material counts and resolve discrepancies promptly.
Ensure all storage areas are organized safe and compliant.
Follow established procedures for inventory control and material handling.
Use the corporate ERP system and related tools for material management functions.
Stack re-stack and organize materials or product to ensure safety and efficiency.
Reporting & Communication
Maintain accurate records of production labor downtime and material.
Communicate effectively with management maintenance planning and quality teams.
Participate in production meetings and status reviews.
Production Oversight
Assist in managing daily production activities across assigned shifts or lines.
Schedule and assign work to meet production goals and quality standards.
Monitor and maintain key performance metrics (OEE throughput downtime scrap).
Troubleshoot and resolve production issues to minimize downtime.
Team Management & Development
Lead and support a team of operators and material handlers.
Conduct employee training and coaching to build skills and performance.
Foster a culture of accountability collaboration and respect.
Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instructions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Hours
Position is full-time average of 30 - 40 hours per week. Occasional overtime may be required. This position may be scheduled to work during first or second shift.
Education Skills & Experience
13 years of experience in material handling or warehouse organization; experience leading others in a manufacturing environment preferred.
Forklift certification active or forklift experience with the ability to obtain certification on the job. Ability to drive a forklift.
Experience with Lean Manufacturing ERP/MRP systems and continuous improvement tools preferred.
Strong leadership abilities.
Excellent problem-solving organizational and communication skills.
Ability to interpret blueprints production schedules and quality documentation.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel Word Outlook); ERP knowledge (SAP Epicor Oracle etc.) preferred.
Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
