Settlement Youth Worker - Dari/Farsi or Rohingya Speaking

Permanent Part-time (22.5 hours per week)

About the role Kōrero mō te tūranga

In this rewarding role youll provide personalised support to young people from refugee backgrounds as they settle into their new communities. Youll help them build strong social connections find their feet in the education system and get involved in activities that inspire confidence and belonging outside the classroom.

In this role you will:

  • Assist young people to develop and achieve their settlement goals.
  • Advocate on behalf of young people to ensure access to services and resources.
  • Champion settlement best practice for young people within NZRC.
  • Maintain networks with youth specific agencies and services that young people and their families can access.
  • Identify improvements in settlement practices that would enhance the experience of young people settling in NZ.
  • Run youth orientation sessions for each intake and assist with the orientation programme in the community.

Who are we looking for Mā wai te mahi nei

To be successful you:

  • Will be bilingual speaking Dari/Farsi or Rohingya and English to at least an intermediate level
  • Are a former refugee (preferred) or have a comprehensive understanding of the refugee settlement process.
  • Have experience in supporting or working with young people.
  • Are able to relate to support and negotiate with people of different cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • Have a good understanding of the New Zealand system and local social services.
  • Have knowledge of confidentiality and privacy act practices.
  • Have knowledge and experience of the refugee journey and settlement experience.
  • Have advanced computer skills including Excel Word email and database systems.
  • Have excellent time management skills.
  • Have excellent oral listening and written communication skills.
  • Are enthusiastic and have the commitment to work as a team member of NZRC.
  • Have a full drivers licence.
