Senior PHP Backend Engineer

Join our Fitness & Wellbeing vertical as a Senior PHP Backend Engineer in the United Kingdom to make a real impact every day. Youll join our Fitness & Wellbeing vertical where weve recently brought together our Boutique Wellness and Health & Fitness business to form a single global vertical that serves clients around the globe in key markets like the US Canada UK Europe Japan Australia and New Zealand. We have market-leading software products like Xplor Gym (Membr) Mariana Tek TrueCoach Clubware Resamania and Xplor Recreation designed to help our clients manage and grow their business. 

Reporting into the Manager of Software Engineering youll help design build and scale the next generation of our platform. Youll work with a supportive cross-functional team to solve real-world problems and shape the architecture of our backend services.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys writing clean maintainable code and is ready to contribute to important architectural decisions particularly as we move key components out of our monolith and into standalone services.

Some of the other responsibilities include :

• Develop scalable backend services using PHP (Symfony or Laravel).
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs consumed by our web and mobile apps.
• Help lead the architectural design of new services as we evolve toward a service-oriented architecture.
• Collaborate closely with engineers product managers and designers in two-week agile sprints.
• Contribute to planning code reviews and pull requests.
• Write tests and support CI/CD pipelines using Bitbucket and GitHub.
• Take part in our greenfield re-architecture of the payments integration moving it into a standalone event-driven service.

This position is a UK Remote role with a preference for candidates based in the Manchester area where our Xplor Gym (Membr) office is located.

Required qualifications for this role:

• 5 years of backend development experience with PHP.
• Proficiency in Symfony or Laravel frameworks.
• Strong understanding of OOP SOLID principles and modern software engineering practices.
• Experience with relational databases (e.g. MySQL).
• Skilled in designing and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Comfortable with Git Docker and CI/CD pipelines.
• Track record of working on business-critical systems in production.
• Experience with event-driven systems or messaging (e.g. queues pub/sub).
• Understanding of service-oriented or microservice architectures.
• Familiarity with NoSQL databases (MongoDB DynamoDB).
• Experience with AWS and serverless technologies.
• Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code and deployment pipelines.
• Pragmatic problem-solver who enjoys technical challenges.
• Collaborative team player who values knowledge sharing.
• Adaptable and self-directed able to thrive in a changing environment.
