We are seeking an experienced and motivated Geotechnical Department Manager to lead our growing team in Auburn Hills Michigan. This position is responsible for managing a variety of geotechnical projects across industrial commercial and residential markets. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise proven leadership skills and a passion for developing teams and building client relationships.
As the Geotechnical Department Manager you will oversee department operations ensure quality project delivery manage budgets and play a key role in business development and strategic growth.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Department Management
- Lead and mentor a team of geotechnical engineers and field staff fostering a positive and productive work environment.
- Oversee daily department operations project schedules and quality control processes.
- Manage staffing workload distribution and performance evaluations.
Strategic Planning and Financial Oversight
- Develop long-term goals and business plans to support company growth.
- Manage departmental budgets project profitability and resource allocation.
- Review and approve departmental expenses invoices and client billing.
Project Management
- Oversee all phases of geotechnical and construction materials testing projects.
- Collaborate with architects civil engineers and other technical teams to ensure successful project completion.
- Maintain client satisfaction by delivering high-quality work on schedule and within budget.
Business Development and Client Relations
- Build and maintain relationships with clients and industry partners.
- Support proposal development pricing strategies and project bids.
- Represent the company at industry events and networking opportunities.
Policy Compliance and Quality Assurance
- Develop and enforce department policies procedures and quality standards.
- Ensure compliance with all local state and federal regulations.
- Promote continuous improvement and best practices within the department.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Michigan or the ability to obtain licensure.
- Minimum of 10 years of geotechnical or civil engineering experience with increasing responsibility.
- Proven experience managing teams budgets and multi-disciplinary projects.
- Strong working knowledge of geotechnical design software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Familiarity with Michigan codes regulations and site development standards.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Primarily office-based role with some field visits to project sites.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and perform site inspections as needed.
- Requires the use of standard office and field equipment.
Schedule and Travel
- Full-time position Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Occasional overtime may be required.
- Local travel to project sites is expected.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $120000 to $150000 per year plus bonus opportunities up to 15 percent.
- Comprehensive benefits package including medical dental and vision insurance.
