Job Summary

A leading Independent School in Norwich is seeking a proactive organised and highly practical Art Technician to join its creative arts department from January on a full-time permanent basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on solutions-driven candidate who thrives in busy studio environments and enjoys supporting high-quality art and design learning across a range of media.

You will work closely with the Head of Art and classroom teachers to ensure lessons run smoothly and safely. Core responsibilities include: preparing and organising materials for lessons (paint inks clay printmaking plates canvases photographic chemicals) setting up/clearing down practical workshops maintaining and safely operating equipment (including kilns printing presses guillotines spray booths darkroom enlargers and sewing machines) and keeping studios sinks and storage areas tidy labelled and compliant with H&S standards. You will manage stock and ordering liaise with suppliers track budgets and keep up-to-date inventories. The role also involves supporting exhibitions and displays mounting and hanging work to a professional standard photographing and archiving student pieces and assisting with portfolio preparation and open evenings.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as an Art/DT Technician studio assistant or similar workshop role (school or studio).

  • Confident with H&S including risk assessments safe systems of work COSHH and manual handling (training can be provided).

  • Practical competence with one or more of: ceramics/kiln firing printmaking photography/darkroom framing/mounting basic carpentry textile processes or Adobe Creative Cloud for basic prep and print.

  • Highly organised excellent attention to detail calm under pressure and comfortable working to deadlines across multiple teachers/classes.

  • A relevant craft/design qualification is desirable but not essential; a strong practical toolkit and willingness to learn are key. An enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain) is required.

Salary: Competitive salary (Independent School support staff scale) commensurate with experience.
