Position Overview

Under direct supervision receives day-to-day guidance and assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer at the Murray Developmental Center. Performs skilled journey level carpentry work in the construction maintenance repair or alteration at the Murray Developmental Center and other facilities within the Central and Southern Regions on an as needed basis. Works in the carpentry shop; performs cabinet work operations and maintains hand tools and equipment. Determines supplies needed to perform carpentry and/or cabinet work; lifts equipment/materials weighing up to 75 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance in the performance of duties. Adheres to applicable Illinois Department of Public Health Life Safety Codes and Occupational Safety and Health Administrations. Travels in performance of job duties.

Essential Functions

  • Receives day-to-day guidance and assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer at the Murray Developmental Center.
  • Performs repair work on damaged wheelchairs including fabricating belts from rolled web material attaching tips and buckles inspects wheelchairs and determines problems.
  • Works in carpenter shop.
  • Assists with repairs of cracked sidewalks and mortar joints.
  • Exercises appropriate safety precautions in the use and handling of tools and equipment paying particular attention to these procedures when working in residential and training areas.
  • Determines supplies needed to perform carpentry or cabinet work.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires completion of approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires a valid Illinois drivers license.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
  • Requires the ability to climb ladders stairs and roofs and access all locations at the facility.
  • Requires the ability to lift 75 pounds independently.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment including personal computers.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
