Location: ThermoFisher Scientific Uppsala Sweden (On site). You are expected to be on site regularly although it will be possible to work remotely as well.
Duration: Jan-June 2026
Supervisors: Louise Jungefeldt Instrument & Consumables Sustainability Engineer and Jamieson Crawford Sr. Product Design Engineer

Project overview:


Thermo Fisher Scientific develops manufactures and distributes in vitro diagnostic tests and instruments for allergies and autoimmune diseases. The principle of the test is based on measuring levels of IgE-antibodies that bind certain allergens in the blood.

We are committed to designing our products with the environment in mind and as part of our work within Design for Sustainability we aim to conduct a material flow analysis (MFA) of the manufacturing process. The result of this study will be used to enhance the data quality of our life cycle assessments.

In addition the goal of the study is to identify potential Cleaner Production actions to reduce material losses and the climate impact of the manufacturing of tests and reagents.


Objectives:
Conduct a MFA of the production of tests and reagents at the site in Uppsala.
Identify potential Cleaner Production actions to reduce waste streams and the environmental impact of the manufacturing processes.
Optional (based on timeframe): Evaluating the proposed Cleaner Production actions based on technical environmental organizational and economical aspects.


The work includes data collection from various resources within the company mapping of material flows and current waste streams literature review and analysis.


You will learn:


How to approach challenges within the field of industrial ecology in a systematic way.
Gain insight into ways of working with sustainability within a global company from product development to production.
How to apply environmental system analysis tools within manufacturing.

You will need:


Proficiency in English.
Ongoing masters level studies in industrial engineering sustainability industrial ecology environmental science or similar. Preferably with a knowledge of material or energy flow analysis and cleaner production.
Proactive and analytical
Curious and with a strong interest in sustainability.
