Project Overview:

Thermo Fisher Scientific in Uppsala develops innovative diagnostic solutions that support clinical laboratories and healthcare providers in improving patient outcomes. Within the System R&D department this bachelor thesis will focus on advancing the design and material selection of a stool extraction device an essential component in sample preparation workflows for diagnostic testing.

The goal of this project is to continue the development of the existing plastic-based stool extraction device with a particular focus on identifying and testing alternative materials that offer environmental advantages without compromising performance or regulatory compliance. You will conduct comparative material studies mechanical testing and evaluate manufacturability biocompatibility and environmental impact.

Additionally you will assess user needs in home sampling scenarios exploring how design modifications could improve usability robustness and sustainability. This work will provide valuable hands-on experience in product development under medical device design constraints and give insights into sustainable material innovation for life science applications.

You will learn:

  • How to conduct structured design evaluations and material testing for regulated products.

  • Methods for selecting materials for diagnostic devices.

  • Application of design controls and risk management principles within product development.

  • User-centered design practices for home sampling applications.

  • Collaboration across R&D disciplines including design engineering materials science and usability engineering.

Tools:

  • CAD (Preferably Creo)

  • 3-D Printing

You will need:

  • Fluency in English.

  • Intermediate proficiency in a 3D CAD-program.

  • Ongoing bachelors level studies with a strong focus on product development

  • Interest in sustainable materials and eco-design.

  • Curious proactive and interested in focusing your career on designing products for professional users.
