Role Purpose
The Head of Department (HOD) English (IBDP / IGCSE) will provide academic and administrative leadership to the English Department. The role involves overseeing the planning delivery and assessment of English curricula across the IBDP and IGCSE programmes mentoring teachers and ensuring the highest standards of teaching and learning. The HOD will also contribute to strategic academic planning professional development and school-wide literacy initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Academic and Departmental Leadership
Lead and manage the English Department across IBDP IGCSE and lower secondary levels (if applicable).
Ensure curriculum continuity alignment and progression across grade levels.
Oversee the design and implementation of IBDP and IGCSE English Language and Literature courses.
Conduct lesson observations provide feedback and mentor English teachers to maintain academic quality.
Coordinate departmental goals improvement plans and resource management.
Promote inquiry-based learning and assessment for learning practices.
Teaching and Learning
Teach English Language and/or English Language & Literature at IBDP and/or IGCSE level.
Model effective instructional practices and high academic standards.
Encourage critical thinking communication and literary appreciation among students.
Guide teachers and students through IB Internal Assessments (IAs) Individual Oral (IO) Higher-Level Essay (HLE) and IGCSE coursework.
Monitor student achievement and implement strategies for academic improvement.
Curriculum Development and Assessment
Lead curriculum review and ensure alignment with IB and Cambridge frameworks.
Ensure assessments are fair consistent and aligned with programme objectives.
Review and analyze student performance data for continuous improvement.
Support teachers in developing inquiry-based and interdisciplinary learning experiences.
Faculty Development and Collaboration
Organize departmental meetings workshops and collaborative planning sessions.
Identify and support teachers professional development needs.
Encourage innovation in teaching practices and use of technology in learning.
Facilitate participation in IB and Cambridge training sessions.
Student Engagement and Enrichment
Foster a culture of reading creative writing and public speaking across the school.
Support student participation in literary events debates theatre and MUN activities.
Mentor students in the Extended Essay (EE) and other independent projects.
Administrative Responsibilities
Manage departmental records reporting and budgeting.
Participate in recruitment and evaluation of English faculty.
Collaborate with academic leadership on policy development and school-wide goals.
Uphold the IB Learner Profile school ethos and safeguarding standards.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
Masters or Bachelors degree in English Literature English Language or related field.
Minimum 68 years of teaching experience including at least 2 years in a leadership or coordination role.
Strong understanding of both IBDP and Cambridge IGCSE English curricula.
Proven ability to lead and inspire a team of teachers.
Excellent communication planning and organizational skills.
Proficiency in integrating digital tools into teaching and learning.
Commitment to reflective practice and professional growth.
Desirable
Experience as HOD Academic Coordinator or Senior English Faculty in an international school.
Completion of IB Category 2 or 3 workshops and/or Cambridge PDQ certification.
Experience mentoring teachers and supporting Extended Essay or Internal Assessment projects.
Background in creative writing drama debate or media studies.
International or multicultural school experience.
