Kickstart your career in a skilled trade by joining the City and County of Honolulus Trades Apprenticeship Program as a Trades Apprentice I. This is your opportunity to learn and develop skills through paid hands-on training and classroom instruction in one of the following trades: Automotive Construction/Mechanical Electrical or Pipefitting.

How the Program Works:
  • As an apprentice youll participate in a structured 3-5 year program that combines on-the-job training with related classroom instruction in one of the above mentioned trades.
  • Under the terms of an apprentice agreement the City provides supervised on-the-job training and youll agree to work and attend community college courses to learn the trade.
  • On-the-job training will include orientation on basic work operations work processes and work rules for the skilled trade shadowing and training under journey-level workers and supervisors and completing progressively more difficult responsible and skilled assignments as you learn the trade.
  • Classroom instruction is conducted at the community college after regular work hours on your own time. Youll also pay for the tuition fees and books upfront and upon successful completion of the semester be reimbursed for these costs by the City.
  • Upon successful completion of the full training program you will be converted to initial probationary status in your skilled trade area.
  • In addition if you have previous training and experience you may submit this to the Joint Apprenticeship Committee for possible credit and advancement to a higher apprenticeship level.
Anticipated Vacancies:
Currently anticipated vacancies are Limited-Term Appointments with the Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS). Positions are located island-wide.

As vacancies occur this list may be used for apprenticeships in specialty areas such as Automotive Construction/Mechanical Electrical and Pipefitting.

TRADES APPRENTICE I APPLICATION PROCESS: SAVE THIS JOB POSTING FOR FUTURE REFERENCE

1) Applications must be submitted online byNOVEMBER 1 2025 11:59 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (HST).No late applications will be accepted.


2) Written Test Self-Scheduling Period: November 14 - November 16 2025
Applicants must sign up to take a civil service written test as part of the Trades Apprentice I application evaluation process. During the written test self-scheduling period noted above applicants must log into their GovernmentJobs account to register for a written test session.

Prior to the self-scheduling period applicants who qualify to take the written test will be NOTIFIEDBYE-MAILon November 13 2025 with instructions on how to self-schedule for the written test.

E-mail addresses must be up-to-date in order for you to receive your instructions to self-schedule.

Candidates must self-schedule online during the self-scheduling period in order to take the written test. Candidates who do NOT self-schedule will be disqualified from further consideration and will NOT BE ADMITTED to the written test.
3) Written Test Date:SATURDAY JANUARY 17 2026

You must pass a written test which may cover the following areas: mathematics understanding and following written instructions and reading comprehension.

The written test will be administered ONLY on Oahu and ONLY onSaturday January 17 2026.
NO MAKEUPS WILL BE PERMITTED - So Mark Your Calendars Now!
Approximately 7 - 10 days prior to the written test candidates scheduled to take the written test will be MAILED an admission letter for entry into the test.

Failure to report to a scheduled written test session will result in the disqualification of your application from further consideration for the Trades Apprentice I position.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
None.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of an appropriate valid Hawaii State drivers license as required depending on the specific position. Some positions require CDL B prior to completion of the Trades Apprentice Program.
