DescriptionPosition Title: Cataloging and Processing Archivist.
Department: Acquisitions and Resource Management.

Work Schedule: The standard 40-hour work schedule is Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; flexible work arrangements can be proposed and are subject to approval by HR and relevant supervisors.
Work Location: On Campus.
Salary Range: $56000 - $63000.
Essential Job Duties:
- Metadata creation.
- Process or re-process existing archival holdings of college records manuscripts and audiovisual collections.
- Produce and maintain finding aids name authority records and descriptive records in accordance with DACS and national and local input standards.
- Research historical and biographical information relevant to each archival collection.
- Maintain archival processing documentation.
- Assist in the review and maintenance of the data in Collective Access.
- Provide assistance with library special collections cataloging and authority control as directed.
- Processing and digitization.
- Survey and process incoming acquisitions.
- Work collaboratively with the college archivist to identify project scopes and priorities.
- Advise on conservation strategies and priorities as necessary and re-house materials as directed and in accordance with best practices.
- Recommend targets for digitization and assist in the loading of digital images to Elevator and Collective Access.
- General Responsibilities.
- Participate in Library and IT Services and Bridge teams/working groups as assigned.
- Attend all relevant Library and IT Services and Bridge meetings and functions scheduled during regular working hours.
- Work collaboratively and in tandem with peers at Carleton College to ensure that work is not duplicated and that costs are contained or reduced.
- Serve as a backup to other staff as needed and as requested by the supervisor.
- Perform other duties as requested by the library leadership.
- Promote services and represent the libraries and IT including creating media planning & working at events contributing ideas and helping the Events & Engagement Committee to make the libraries a welcoming place.
- Support respect and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds values and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community.
- Complete and meet deadlines for required training and performance management cycle.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
- Reports to the Head of Acquisitions and Resource Management.
- This position does not supervise staff or student workers.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelors degree; coursework towards a graduate degree in library or archival science.
- Experience: 1 year professional experience entering and managing metadata with an archival collections management system such as Collective Access or a library management system such as Alma.
- Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice including 1 year professional experience processing archival records and creating archival metadata.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education: Masters degree in library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association with specialization in archival processing and cataloging.
- Experience: 3-5 years of professional experience (or extensive volunteer experience) working in an archival setting with a focus on collections processing and cataloging.
Desired Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of and experience with creating archival finding aids using DACS LCSH LC Name Authorities and other applicable metadata standards and vocabularies.
- Knowledge of and experience creating and reviewing library catalog records using MARC and RDA.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
- Ability to continually prioritize the workload to determine what must be done first in order to complete work in a timely manner.
- Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
- Ability to pay attention to detail within the context of the big picture.
- Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability and willingness to support respect and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds values and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community including faculty staff students and constituents.
