Job Summary

The California Endowment (TCE) is entering a newstrategic planning processto ensure we can support our grantee partners and communities with renewed urgency focus and effectiveness. Our new strategic plan will be ready to launch in 2027 and in the meantime we are implementing a Bridge Strategy to respond quickly and strategically to our current times.

The California Endowment is seeking several Implementation Strategists leaders who can bridge vision and practice into strategies that advance community health and equity. We are seeking individuals who bring deep understanding of bring deep understanding of the following systems: Health Care Public Health or Inclusive Community Development and are based in Los Angeles Oakland/SF Bay Area or Sacramento and who thrive on collaboration with partners inside and outside the organization.

TheImplementation Strategistis primarily responsible for:

  • Leveraging all of The Endowments tools and assets to develop and implement systems change strategies that create health equity;
  • Implementing The Endowments changemaking efforts including grantmaking convening and other programmatic activities;
  • Building relationships with leaders and organizations to advance The Endowments goals;
  • Contributing to the success of The Endowments external communications and policy efforts; and
  • Supporting The Endowments mission and goals across all enterprise areas.


This position reports to a Strategic Implementation Lead and collaborates with every team at The Endowment (Strategic Communications & Narrative Knowledge Management Investments Finance Human Resources Legal and Operations). The Endowment will be embarking on a long-term strategic planning process in the coming months. To be successful you must be comfortable and adept at leading through change excited to take initiative build new relationships be adaptable and contribute to teams that span across the enterprise.

Systems Transformation will focus on maintaining existing grantee partner relationships for continuity of key initiatives while informing our learning priorities and developing exit/transition strategies.

Position Accountabilities

Strategy Implementation:

  • Ability to convert a high-level framework into clear outcomes. Contribute to the design of actionable strategies that The Endowment can execute to contribute to those outcomes. Allocate resources based on those strategies.
  • Deep understanding of how to use root cause analysis to identify structural and systemic barriers and leverage points ecosystem mapping to analyze stakeholder networks and power dynamics and strategic partnerships to move from idea to outcome.
  • Ability to work withing and outside diverse parts of the systems change ecosystem to drive change.
  • Creates opportunities to collaborate with departments across the enterprise to advance specific strategies e.g. investments communications etc.
  • Implements workplan; reports regularly on progress challenges learnings; identifies and makes modifications as needed with approval and support of Strategic Implementation Lead.
  • Operationalizes concepts and develops tactics to achieve strategic initiative area objectives.

Changemaking:

  • Deploys a range of approaches and resources to drive a strategy to outcomes including trust-based grantmaking strategic convening capacity building and technical assistance (support beyond the check) communications policy and advocacy and impact investing.
  • Combines grantmaking with relationship-building to identify key partners and work to fund and support beyond the grant offering technical assistance professional development or other support as needed.
  • Serves as primary liaison between The Endowment and community/grantee partners in day-to-day communications. Interfaces with grantee partners in a trust-based way building and earning trust with partners through everyday interactions.
  • Maintains ongoing collaborative relationships with communities stakeholders non-profits philanthropy the private sector and among community and cultural leaders necessary to advance the Endowments mission and goals.
  • Actively engages in funder organizing (public and private funders) to align resources towards shared goals.

Thought Leadership and Influence:

  • Develops communications and influences strategies that advance The Endowments impact objectives in collaboration with the Strategic Communications and Narrative team.
  • Serves as content lead for designated initiatives.
  • Provides thought leadership in the field actively contributing to field-wide learning and collaboration positioning The Endowment as both a leader and a partner to those driving change.
  • Develops manages and maintains an extensive and diverse network of external relationships with other funders policymakers and grantee partners to advance impact.
  • Communicates regularly with stakeholders and partners about The Endowments learning activities and progress.
  • Remains current on a broad range of social drivers of health issues and philanthropic responses through literature review contact with professional communities participation in relevant conferences and other educational programs.

Knowledge Management and Innovation:

  • In collaboration with the Knowledge Management team develops and oversees data evaluation and learning strategies. Tracks the progress of The Endowments learning and impact objectives.
  • Conducts regular check-ins with grantee partners and stakeholders centered around learning. Efforts include capturing learning data from grant partner conversations events and observations and sharing learning internally and with others in the field.
  • Cultivates a culture of learning on the teams they lead and participate in. Participates in and contributes to learning sessions.
  • Identifies data needs requests data sets and conducts initial analysis and interpretation of data collected for initiative areas.
  • Committed to learning and applying trust-based philanthropy principles in The Endowments culture structure leadership and practices.

Leadership Staff Management and Development:

  • Responsible for managing one or more direct reports. Establishes clear goals based on initiative workplans. Establishes clear roles responsibilities and expectations.
  • Provides leadership and coaching on strategic philanthropy acts as a resource to direct reports and others throughout the enterprise.
  • Conducts performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Supports ongoing performance management by providing guidance clear and consistent feedback and supporting opportunities for learning and development.
  • Effectively manages and leads others through change.
  • Fosters and leads a diverse collaborative and inclusive work environment that welcomes points of view that are inclusive of each persons professional cultural social ethnic and experiential backgrounds.
  • Develops and shares reports and updates to the Board regarding our strategies programming and outcomes; facilitates program sessions at Board meetings as needed.

Operations:

  • Manages budgets associated with initiatives and strategies. Oversees and manages grants contracts and DCAs; regularly tracking spend and variance (for contracts and Direct Charitable Activities).
  • Tracks and coordinates activities including planning and budget.
  • Develops and manages contracts including tracking of budget and deliverables for any approved consultants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Passion for The Endowments mission is essential.
  • Experience driving health-focused systems change by working with diverse stakeholders (communities advocates policymakers institutions media etc.).
  • Subject matter expertise in health and the social drivers of health.
  • Knowledge of philanthropy and trust-based practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a positive and solutions-oriented attitude in times of internal or external challenge and change and a strong commitment to showing up in support of The Endowments mission.
  • Strong interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills that foster collaboration across teams and departments encouraging openness shared learning and the cultivation of a positive inclusive and high-performing culture.
  • Ability to apply root cause analysis to understand complex social issues.
  • Basic financial acumen including the ability to learn or apply knowledge of budget management cash flow forecasting and resource planning. Must be able to understand and help determine the financial resources needed to carry out annual work plans and meet quarterly deliverables.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail oriented while able to see the big picture.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop staff whether through direct or indirect reporting structures.

Minimum Experience

  • 5 or more years of relevant work experience in health health equity (particularly racial and ethnic health disparities) and public policy.
  • Experience and education equivalent to an advanced degree with a deep understanding of social and structural drivers of health.
  • Minimum 2 years supervisory and staff development experience.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations and the public sector ideally in a field related to health equity and the social drivers of health.
  • Experience in organizing mobilizing and/or public policy advocacy.
  • Experience in program development implementation and evaluation in a systems-change context.
  • Experience in managing tracking and balancing budgets a plus.
  • Proven track record in building effective collaborative partnerships and networks across issue areas communities and systems and navigating complex environments with multiple stakeholders from different disciplines related to social drivers of health.
  • Proven experience working in both rural and urban communities small and larger towns and moving between them seamlessly.
  • Experience in data collection analysis documentation and reporting.
  • Experience with or technological aptitude for working with grants management systems and databases.
  • Strong operational experience and skill in organizing information quickly and easily.
  • Solid experience advancing racial equity and social justice in an organization or in communities.
  • Experience representing an organization in diverse fora and maintaining broad organizational relationships.

Salary Range

Target Range:$151200 - $189000
