Orthopedic Tech 1 MA Adult Primary Care Brittany Clinic

The Orthopedic Tech 1 - MA is responsible for application and removal of casts including complex casting and orthopedic splints and devices. The position has a significant amount of patient contact and is typically involved in the team assessment of patient needs and fitting/finishing services of patients. The Orthopedic Tech 1 - MA ensures the proper maintenance record keeping and ordering of tools equipment and/or inventory. This position requires a fundamental knowledge of technical work with orthopedic bracing and casting related activities. Positions allocated to this level are responsible for application modification repair and fitting of a wide variety of casts splints and braces. Casting activities include application of upper and lower extremity casts from simple to complex using a variety of materials; arrange assemble and adjust traction equipment; apply and adjust braces and splints; and remove sutures and staples. The Orthopedic Tech 1 - MA will also assist in stocking and ordering of supplies. Clinical work is performed under the general supervision of a licensed patient care professional or supervisory staff.

1. Primary Responsibilities
   1. Perform a variety of orthopedic related activities including applying and removing dressings removing sutures/staples applying and removing casts and splints.
   2. Assist provider team with surgical casting needs.
   3. Assist physician in back-office duties including rooming patients taking vital signs and patient history and assisting with minor procedures.
   4. Properly identifies patient by requesting patient name DOB prior to any patient interactions.
   5. Ensures confidentiality of protected patient health information by utilizing safe business practices that support HIPAA regulations.
   6. Assists the physician with minor surgical procedures and follows appropriate procedures for obtaining handling and processing specimens and cultures.
2. Additional Responsibilities
   1. Maintain work area exam rooms supplies and equipment.
   2. Perform associated clerical tasks including scheduling filing phone messages preparing charts etc.
   3. Maintain a professional appearance and personal conduct at all times.
   4. Work as a team member within the orthopedics department and all other departments.
   5. Document work processes as required.
3. Other Requirements
   1. Thorough knowledge of Orthopedic nomenclature anatomy and disease process.
   2. Knowledge of examination diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
   3. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
   4. Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation.
   5. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person by phone and in writing.
   6. Requires adherence to all policies and procedures including but not limited to standards for safety attendance punctuality and personal appearance.
4. Other Duties as Assigned
   1. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Required Experience - Minimum of two years experience in an orthopedic clinic and/or hospital setting.

Required Education - Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program.

Preferred Training - Completion of Certified Orthopedic Technology training program preferred. Completion of an Allied Health program in a related field with Surgical Assist program preferred.

Special Skills - Ability to apply and remover casts and splinter.

Ability to assemble and adjust traction equipment.

Ability to maintain quality control standards.

Ability to multi-task efficiently and take direction of multiple sources.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships withpatients medical staff and the public.

Ability to assist in a variety of treatments as directed.

Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with difficult people.

Excellent telephone skills.

Computer literate: Ability to document care performed in electronic medical record.

Required Licensure - American Heart Association BLS Certification
