Join our fabulous Transport Planning team and work on high-profile nationally recognised projects through the Transport Scotland Graduate Scheme. Using the CIHT Professional Development Framework this program offers an exceptional opportunity to develop your skills and achieve Chartered status with the CIHT preparing you for senior roles in the industry. These roles are expected to start in September 2026.

Since 2006 our Graduate Training Scheme has successfully guided graduates to become Chartered Transport Planning Professionals. Designed for the CIHT Standard route to chartership it provides tailored focused development from day one helping to nurture in-house talent for possible future senior positions within Transport Scotland.

Our internal rotations within Transport Scotland combined with external secondments to consultancies and other public bodies offer you unique opportunities to gain hands-on experience and develop skills that are hard or time-consuming to achieve elsewhere. This broadens your expertise in planning policy and project management helping you make sound planning decisions.

Graduates enter a Training Agreement with Transport Scotland outlining responsibilities and aligning with the Professional Bodys Training Scheme. Progress is tracked through the CIHTs Professional Development Framework ensuring graduates are on track to meet the CIHT competencies and achieve professional qualification.

Responsibilities

Specific tasks/duties will change dependent on which Directorate you are working in at the time as a graduate. Graduates will have input into their scheduled placements to help tailor their experiences to their individual preferences whilst ensuring that business priorities are being met. The key areas you will be responsible for are:

  • Project management.
  • Stakeholder management.
  • Technical challenges.
  • Procurement of services.
  • Supporting Government Ministers.

Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate that they hold an approved UK Transport Masters degree or have completedan approvedTPS Professional Development Scheme to follow the standard route to the CTPP qualification. You can check your degree against theApproved Masters Degrees for CIHT CTPP Standard Route. These posts are for intake in September 2026 so candidates in their final year of study are welcome to apply. Appointments will be made subject to satisfactory completion of your qualifications. Please make it clear in your CV that you hold a valid qualification.

Success profile

Candidates will have their applications assessed against all criteria listed in the Success Profile the event of a large number of applications are received an initial sift will be conducted on the Lead Criteria of the Behaviour Making Effective Decisions. Candidates who pass the initial sift will have their applications fully assessed against all remaining criteria.

Working Pattern

Our standard hours are 35 hours per week. We offer a range of flexible and hybrid working options depending on the needs of the role. If you have specific questions about the role you are applying for please contact us.

You will require to be office based twice per week.

Security checks

Successful candidates must complete the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) before they can be appointed. BPSS is comprised of four main pre-employment checks Identity Right to work Employment History and a Criminal Record check (unspent convictions).
