Definition:

Under administrative direction provide quality veterinary care and treatment for animals at the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Essential Functions

  • The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below.
  • Performs physical examinations preventive medicine vaccinations diagnostics and other ongoing care and treatment for animals brought to and being retained at the Animal Center including health of animals at impound during extended care period and prior to adoption.
  • Performs surgical procedures including the spaying and neutering of animals treatment of medical conditions or injuries; administering anesthesia and/or medication as needed; uses appropriate medical equipment.
  • Delegates appropriate duties and responsibilities to technical support staff responsible for following prescribed treatment protocols and maintaining treatment records for animals brought to the Animal Center as provided for in established protocols.
  • Ensure adherence to standards of veterinary medicine humane animal treatment proper housing and feeding of animals and cleaning of kennels within the Animal Center.
  • Monitor the health of animals at the facility and work with the Director and management team to determine appropriate treatment procedures.
  • Assist shelter staff in conducting veterinary clinics and implementing special programs such as the low cost spaying and neutering of animals.
  • Monitor facility operations and assist staff by ensuring that environmental standards are in place including proper sanitation practices disease surveillance and monitoring physical examinations vaccinations parasite control disease treatment nutrition outbreak response environmental enrichment and education of staff regarding animal diseases.
  • Maintain effective relations with governmental agencies professional industry representatives interest groups and the general public and answer fundamental questions related to animal and clinical care practices.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends practices techniques and developments in veterinary medicine and animal care and welfare.
  • Analyze medical records in the context of the clinical insurance and administrative needs of the organization and advise Animal Services Director of any necessary actions.
  • Perform euthanasia according to established policies and procedures.

Youll be responsible for:

  • Examining diagnosing and treating all sick injured and emergent cases at the Animal Center.
  • Overseeing routine examinations preventative care postmortem examinations and monitoring the health of the Centers population of animals.
  • Achieving (or learning to achieve) 30-50 spay and neuter surgeries per day; performing other life-saving surgeries to help animals become adoptable.
  • Developing and overseeing veterinary protocols and procedures for veterinary support staff to administer.
  • Assisting field services with cruelty and neglect cases including writing comprehensive medical evaluations for case files and testifying in court.
  • Performing and overseeing euthanasia of animals according to established policies and procedures.
  • Being the Managing License Holder for the Animal Centers premise permit possess a valid DEA license and oversee VACSP holders.
  • Ensuring compliance with VMB OSHA DEA and other regulatory agency requirements.
  • Staying current on trends in animal welfare and veterinary medicine; representing the Animal Center at professional organizations meetings and community events.
  • On-call as needed for emergencies and disaster response.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited university with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary M.D. (VMD) designation and at least three years of recent professional clinical experience in a professional animal medicine practice working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital or other animal care setting. Prior experience working with an animal shelter and in a lead or supervisory capacity is highly desirable.
  • Possession of a professional Veterinarian license certified to practice in the State of California as approved by the State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine.

License or Certificate:

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C or Class 3 California Drivers License and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of a professional Veterinarian license certified to practice in the State of California as approved by the State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine.
  • Be the Managing Licensee for the Animal Centers premise permit and maintain a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license.
