Job Summary

Position details:
This job posting will be open until filled and will hire two individuals.
This is a seasonal full-time (40 hours/week) position and is anticipated to start June 15th 2026 and end on August 21st 2026 (start date can be flexible.)
Hourly rate range: $20.20 - 22.65/hour dependent on experience.
The primary work location is in out of our Glyndon MN office.
Travel across MN ND and SD is expected so a valid drivers license is required.

What We Can Achieve Together:

As our Grassland Monitoring Technician you will be an integral part of a long-term Adaptive Management project aimed at improving the condition of the plant communities on TNCs native prairie preserves. You will also participate in a habitat assessment project for the federally threatened Dakota skipper butterfly.

You will gain exposure to two science and conservation initiatives within our chapters grassland ecosystems. TNC is working with partners to evaluate broad changes in condition of native grasslands in response to grazing and fire. The project is a collaborative effort in which multiple agencies and organizations have overlapping goals (TNC MN Department of Natural Resources United States Fish and Wildlife Service etc.). Partners in this work are coordinating sampling to compare data and management practices across ownerships throughout the prairie region.

With your assistance as one of our Technicians TNC will revisit sites on which management has been implemented to measure the outcomes. You will fill a critical role in helping our chapter to close the adaptive management loop in our grassland conservation work. You will also spend time contributing to monitoring outcomes for the impacts of fire on habitat quality for the federally threatened Dakota skipper butterfly.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Maintain project records and participate in data collection data entry and data management.
Use field botanical skills to conduct surveys spending the majority of their time outdoors.
Survey and identify grassland plants in the upper Midwest or Great Plains.
Travel to many of TNCs preserves across Minnesota North Dakota and South Dakota.
Perform administrative work related to project and data management as needed.
Collaborate with other TNC staff on vegetation monitoring in grassland systems.
Working independently in the field in variable weather conditions at remote locations in uneven terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

What Youll Bring:

  • Associates Degree in natural resources; environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months experience.

  • Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.

  • A valid drivers license.

This position requires a valid drivers license and compliance with TNCs Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles rental cars or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered high risk drivers. Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement which may include a review of the prospective employees motor vehicle record.

Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $20.20 - 22.65 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidates actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors including for example the candidates location qualifications specific skills and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
