Job Summary

The salary for this role is 42858 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days a week however we actively support requests for flexible working.

This role will be based in Culham Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data. 

The Role

As an Integrated Modeller and Scenario Developer you will play a pivotal role in exploiting JETTO core transport code and its integrated models and testing new or upgraded models in JETTO as they become available. 

Your career development as a scientist will be strongly supported including working towards chartership with the Institute of Physics. 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Developing interpretive and predictive simulations of scenarios for MAST-U.
  • Validating predictive capability of integrated models against experimental data and identifying regimes and regions where model improvement is required.
  • Understanding experimental results relating to transport and confinement e.g. observed confinement scalings impurity accumulation variations in observed plasma performance.
  • Performing core-edge coupled simulations with JINTRAC

Qualifications :

A demonstrably strong scientific and technical aptitude is very important and we will consider favourably candidates with desire willingness and potential to learn new skills and to grow into new areas of physical and technical knowledge.

  • PhD-level knowledge of tokamak physics or equivalent work experience
  • Experience and knowledge of physics integrated modelling

Desirable (any of these would be an asset):

Experience and knowledge of at least one area of tokamak plasma modelling such as:

  • Core turbulent transport models (quasilinear and/or gyrokinetic/gyrofluid codes).
  • Edge plasma transport or plasma exhaust transport modelling.
  • Heating and current drive particle sources.
  • MHD / ELM / pedestal modelling.
  • Demonstrated programming skills in Python C and Fortran. Knowledge of software development tools and good coding practices
