ROLE of the POSITION
The University of Nevada Las Vegas invites applications for a full-time Non-Tenure-Track (NTT) Assistant Professor-in-Residence of Communication Studies in the Honors College. At UNLV the in-Residence label refers to teaching positions with a service component but no research requirement. The position is promotable through traditional rank. It is not a visiting position. The successful candidate will be employed as a member of the Honors Collegenot the Communication Department. The anticipated start date is August 1 2026.
We invite candidates with strong teaching experience in Communication Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to teach four Honors courses per semester; this typically includes three public speaking courses and a senior level special topics seminar of their own design. Course assignments may also to include a 200-level interpersonal communication course depending on the candidates preference and needs of the college. The majority of Honors College courses are in person; however there are some online and hybrid courses offered. The successful candidate is also expected to collaborate with Honors College faculty mentor undergraduate students supervise senior Honors research thesis projects and participate in appropriate levels of service to the college university and community. Because the Honors College espouses a strong sense of community and a relationship rich education faculty are expected to have a substantial in-person presence on campus.
PROFILE of the HONORS COLLEGE
The Honors College at UNLV is a small selective college within the university that offers an exceptional undergraduate core experience for highly motivated students. The Honors College provides students with a liberal arts experience in addition to their academic majors. The combination of a central Honors intellectual core and specialized learning in a major discipline helps develop graduates who are fully prepared to succeed in graduate and professional schools and in rewarding careers.
The Honors College at UNLV currently has 11 faculty-in-residence specializing in a variety of disciplines and more than 1200 students. Classroom sizes are maintained at approximately 20 students to ensure a small dynamic learning experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a Ph.D. in Communication Studies or closely related fields from a regionally accredited college or university. The degree must be awarded prior to the start of employment.
Applicants must be prepared to teach Honors Public Speaking and 400-level Honors special topics seminars.
Applicants must demonstrate a significant and proven record of transformative teaching appropriate to their rank. Candidates should demonstrate a record of service at the student college university or community level.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Honors College seeks candidates who in addition to disciplinary expertise demonstrate:
A strong commitment to student success mentoring and undergraduate intellectual development.
Proven ability to develop and deliver well-structured rigorous and innovative courses.
Evidence of effective innovative and creative instructional methods that promote active learning and critical thinking
Preference will be given to candidates with a social science background who can also teach Honors courses in interpersonal communication health communication and/or organizational communication. Candidates are invited to highlight any experience teaching in an Honors environment service-learning or online/hybrid formats.
