Position Summary
Stand-out applicants will have a strong track record in public practice demonstrating imagination and skill in working collaboratively to connect history or historic sites with public audiences. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a dynamic research agenda; to inspire and train undergraduate and graduate students; and to join with existing faculty in program administration and long-term planning. This position expands a thriving public history program in which students can receive a B.A. in History with a Public History concentration a M.A. degree in History with a concentration in Museum Studies and a Ph.D. in U.S. history with a minor concentration in Public History. Applicants with demonstrated experience in historic preservation material culture digital history community-engaged practice and/or oral history are particularly encouraged to apply. While this is a tenure-track position an appointment made effective January 1 2026 will be as visiting assistant professor (pre-tenure-track) for the spring semester with the tenure-track appointment commencing effective August 1 2026. The visiting appointment is necessary to effectuate a normal tenure clock. Candidate must hold or anticipate a Ph. D in History or related field by January 1 2026. Responsibilities include: Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in public history and in the candidates area of specialization both in person and online. Continuing an active program of peer-reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity. Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Providing service and leadership for our Public History programs and to the department college university and community.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates should hold or anticipate holding a Ph.D in History or affiliated fields by January 1 2026.
