Reporting to the Senior Engineer the Traffic Signals Project Engineer is responsible for the review analysis engineering and oversight of design and construction for traffic signal projects across Edmonton. As a Traffic Signals Project Engineer this position will use strong problem-solving and communication skills to execute traffic signal design and construction that improve traffic flow and enhance safety for people walking biking and driving. This position will plan and oversee all aspects of a project in order to meet project goals on time and within budget using accepted engineering principles practices and design standards.

What will you do
- Plan and oversee all aspects of traffic signal projects to meet goals on time and within budget using accepted engineering principles practices and design standards
- Create scopes of work for projects
- Manage project budgeting and cost (estimate review change order review and project closeout)
- Develop prepare and/or review authenticated engineering plans and designs for traffic signals and intersection controls
- Prepare authenticated functional specifications and create timing sheets for new traffic signal and traffic control equipment layouts
- Prepare authenticated procedures and guidelines
- Identify and prioritize locations requiring construction improvements and minimize on-street construction impacts
- Review and comment on circulating plans from other City Departments (e.g. Integrated Infrastructure Services)
- Assist in traffic engineering studies relative to the traffic signal system; develop strategies with systems engineers to improve the responsiveness of the traffic control system
- Analyze and assist with troubleshooting traffic operational issues by conducting traffic engineering analysis of the transportation system (e.g. traffic signal coordination detour timings)
- Determine methods to improve traffic movement and conduct assessments to improve safety at signalized intersections including field checks as required
- Conduct field surveys and assessments to determine functional requirements for new signals and signal upgrades (e.g. traffic count) which may be required to be scheduled outside of normal business hours
- Review and prepare comprehensive responses to inquiries received from the public collaborators members of Council and other City staff
- Perform other related duties as required
Assets:
- Project Management (PMP) certification
- Leadership training
Skills required for success:
- Adherence to APEGA regulations and industry standards with experience in traffic signal timing design
- Strong skills in project and construction management alongside excellent written and verbal communication
- Demonstrated understanding of transportation-related software engineering analysis and design
- Proven abilities in planning problem-solving conflict resolution and collaborative work with knowledge of relevant codes and legislation
- Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( a culture of equity diversity reconciliation and inclusion

Conditions of employment & work environment:
- Up to: 3 temporary full-time positions for up to 11 months
- Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week Monday - Friday
- Salary: $92106.08 - $115131.63 (Annually)
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and office and will require site visits and outdoor reviews at the construction site
- This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
- Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
- Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
