Purpose of Position

The Communication Department at the University of North Dakota seeks a full-time non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant Professor contingent on available funding. The successful applicant will teach a mix of online and traditional face-to-face courses at the introductory to upper level. The area of expertise is open. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in both pedagogy and practice including digital innovation and must hold at least an M.A. in Communication or related discipline by August 15 2026. This position is not eligible for remote work. Reappointment is possible contingent on available funding and satisfactory performance.

Duties & Responsibilities

The teaching load for this position is 4/4. The successful candidate will teach both online and traditional face-to-face courses at the undergraduate level including but not limited to some combination of COMM 200 Writing for New and Traditional Media COMM 206 Digital Communication: Fundamentals COMM 212 Interpersonal Communication COMM 310 Media & Diversity COMM 326 Content Creation for Social Media COMM 339 Digital Video Production COMM 345 Social Media Strategy COMM 352 Writing for Advertising & Public Relations COMM 374 Principles of Strategic Communication COMM 404 Advertising and Society and COMM 430 AD/PR Campaigns. Depending on whether they have a terminal degree the successful candidate may teach graduate-level courses. All faculty including the person hired for this position are expected to contribute service to the department including departmental outreach efforts; college; university; and community. Required Competencies

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including evidence of the ability to teach inspire and mentor students.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty staff and students.
  • Ability and willingness to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the Department of Communication.
  • Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching including online delivery.

Minimum Requirements

  • MA/MS or terminal degree in Communication or related discipline by August 15 2026.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in media and communication industries.
  • Track record of teaching education and/or professional experience related to Communication.
  • Experience teaching college-level courses.
  • Experience teaching diverse courses across the Communication curriculum.
  • Experience teaching online courses.
