JOB DUTIES

Works under the direction of the Farmington Museum Systems Museum Director.

Lead the development and implementation of exhibitions in collaboration with the Director and other stakeholders.

Contribute to interpretive planning label writing and exhibit content that enhances public engagement and understanding.

Conduct original scholarly and object-based research relevant to community history preservation techniques and the museums collections.

Support the development of exhibits publications and programming through informed and thorough research.

Responsible for loans and traveling exhibition organization documentation packing and logistics.

Manage all aspects of collections care and security following and implementing accepted professional museum standards and best practices.

Develop and implement strategies for the acquisition care conservation documentation and storage of artifacts in accordance with professional museum standards.

Ensure the physical preservation of the museums collections through preventive conservation and appropriate environmental controls.

Process public requests for information.

Process reproduction requests from photo collection.

Identify and contact potential donors confer with the director on donors and donations.

Manage collections database (PastPerfect).

Assists with the drafting and implementation of museum policies and procedures.

Manage the annual budget for Collections and Curation.

Train and schedule volunteers to assist with appropriate Collections and Curation activities including research and object handling.

Contribute to institutional planning and special initiatives as needed.

Required to perform shift work in a rotation of days evenings and nights including weekends and holidays.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees officials and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Help greet visitors to the museum and direct inquiries to the appropriate area.

May serve on various community or employee committees as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree in history museum science or related field and extensive experience in museum collections and curation Masters preferred.

A background or interest in contemporary Native art is desirable.

Proficiency in PastPerfect or similar museum collections software.

Demonstrated research skills and the ability to synthesize and communicate complex information clearly.

Knowledge of and experience implementing accepted professional museum standards and best practices in collections management.

This position is subject to the Citys Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program. This includes: pre-employment testing post-accident testing reasonable suspicion testing return-to-duty testing and follow-up testing.

Valid New Mexico or state of current residency drivers license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.

Extensive background checks required.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the Citys Environmental Health and Safety program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal computer and applicable software packages such as Microsoft Word Excel collections database (PastPerfect) calculator copy and fax machine phone motor vehicle and various tools and hardware necessary for museum installation (including painting hammering drilling etc.). Conservation equipment such as digital data loggers hygro-thermograph and sling psychrometer.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee is required to perform shift work in a rotation of days evenings and nights including weekends and holidays.
